Nissan introduces driverless towing system at Oppama Plant
by News Feeder, 24-10-2024, 12:36 AM
YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the introduction of Intelligent Vehicle Towing (IVT), a fully automated vehicle towing system, at its Oppama Plant. Nissan has worked on making the relationship between people, cars and society more exciting under its Intelligent Mobility vision, a framework for how cars will be driven, powered, and integrated into society. This new project, which utilizes mapping and communication technologies to link an intelligent and all-electric car to infrastructure, is a step towards the realization of Nissan Intelligent Integration.About the technology The IVT system uses a modified Nissan LEAF to autonomously tow trollies carrying finished vehicles between designated loading and unloading points at the plant.Unlike conventional automatic guided vehicle systems for transporting parts, which often require the installation of rails or extensive use of magnetic tape, this system does not need any special infrastructure to operate. The towing car is equipped with an array of cameras and laser scanners that detect lane markings, curbs and potential obstacles or hazards around the vehicle. By cross-referencing this information with map data, the towing car calculates its own location, negotiating the route to its destination unaided. The towing car travels within the speed limits of the factory, and automatically stops if it detects an obstacle or hazard ahead, before setting off again when it has determined that the road ahead is clear. The towing route can easily be altered to accommodate changes in production processes or vehicle transport routes. All driverless towing cars are connected to a central traffic control system, which can monitor the location, driving speed, remaining battery and operational status of each vehicle. When two driverless towing cars meet at an intersection, the control system’s algorithm determines which car should be given right-of-way, and in case of emergency, the system can stop the vehicles remotely. Background of development The Oppama Plant’s existing logistics system requires finished vehicles to be transported from the end of the production line to the facility’s dedicated wharf by a team of drivers, at which point they are loaded onto ships. Introducing IVT will allow Nissan to improve production efficiency.Since trial operations of the system began roughly a year ago, more than 1,600 test runs have been carried out at the plant. The data acquired has been utilized to ensure that the system can operate reliably within the plant’s premises. A safety system and a fail-safe system have been developed to counter potential risks or unexpected conditions the IVT system may face during autonomous driving, including adverse weather and low light conditions. Nissan will continue to test the system at its Oppama Plant, and will examine the possibility of implementation at other manufacturing facilities both in and outside Japan.Nissan has been developing autonomous driving technology for decades. In August, the company launched ProPILOT, an award-winning single-lane autonomous driving technology for highway use. IVT further showcases Nissan’s holistic approach to mobility, expanding the advantages of driverless technologies beyond personal usage. The data and know-how obtained through this project will help to enable broader adoption of autonomous driving technology, in order to provide new solutions to our customers, and to our society. About Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. Nissan is a global full-line vehicle manufacturer that sells more than 60 models under the Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun brands. In fiscal year 2015, the company sold more than 5.4 million vehicles globally, generating revenue of 12.2 trillion yen. Nissan engineers, manufactures and markets the world's best-selling all-electric vehicle in history, the Nissan LEAF. Nissan's global headquarters in Yokohama, Japan manages operations in six regions: ASEAN & Oceania; Africa, Middle East & India; China; Europe; Latin America and North America. Nissan has been partnered with French manufacturer Renault since 1999 and Mitsubishi Motors since 2016 under the Renault-Nissan Alliance. For more information on our products, services and commitment to sustainable mobility, visit our website at http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/. “Dreams don't come true unless you act upon them” – Mayra González
by News Feeder, 20-10-2024, 06:58 PM
At the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the diversity of our workforce is one of the reasons for our success. In recent years, we have put an extra emphasis on diversifying our leadership ranks. Recently, Nissan named Mayra González president and managing director of Nissan Mexico, making her the first woman to manage a regional Nissan company worldwide and the youngest person to hold such a position in the company's history. In this recent article from the Huffington Post's Mexico edition, Mayra recalls her personal journey of success. – Renault-Nissan Alliance CEO Carlos GhosnDreams don't come true unless you act upon them By Mayra GonzálezWhen I was a young girl, my parents taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to, I just had to make sure I was the best at it. This is how I became the girl who always won more candy at kids' parties, the girl who always answered questions first in class, and the first one to turn in tests. I feel truly fortunate to have grown up in a home that pushed me beyond the limits and social expectations for women, even in a society like Mexico's – known for its deeply rooted male chauvinism or machismo – where women have few opportunities to exercise their rights.Even though Mexico has experienced positive changes over the last few years in terms of women in the workplace, there is still a huge opportunity to create a more diverse society, particularly as related to equal opportunity in education, work, and life in general. With respect to my personal story, I don't think it has been only a matter of luck. I firmly believe that dreams don't come true unless you make them a reality. I always knew that I would lead a company someday; I just didn't know exactly when it would happen. As a woman, you must work hard and stay focused to make your dreams come true, as we consistently face gender barriers.I remember that my venture into the automotive industry was simply the result of chance. At that time, I was looking for a part time job so that I could buy a car to commute between home and college. That was what led me to apply for a job at a car dealership, which then led me to the sales floor, where I experienced the most amazing revelation of my life: I realized that gasoline runs through my veins.Car sales are unique and the experience transformed my life, because in Mexico, unlike other countries, you celebrate the purchase of a new car as the realization of a dream.I was deeply grateful to be part of this important celebration in the lives of so many people, and was actually invited on several occasions to be part of the family photo customers took when they came to pick up their new cars. That is when I knew that I was on the right path to make my dreams come true. I applied for a job at the company's financial branch, Renault Financial Services, where I started my professional career. Since then, I've spent more than 15 years working for companies within the Renault-Nissan Alliance and, while it has been an intense and challenging experience, it has also been interesting, to say the least. The obstacles and barriers I have overcome are not the focus of my story, but rather how I overcame them and won a seat on the company's board of directors. I believe that this is the true lesson that can be learned from looking for opportunities and taking risks. In my first years as a sales representative, I remember spending hours driving to remote cities in Northern Mexico to visit the brand's dealership owners. I spent even more time sitting outside their offices, waiting for them to receive me, since they could not fathom, at the time, that a woman was there to tell them how to manage their business.I soon understood that I had to offer these men something they didn't have. So, I used information as my primary tool to give them a new perspective. I remember studying the data for each city, including the local market's behavior and even its social situation so I could give them new information they did not know they needed. After a couple of tries, they finally opened their office doors to me, and I started making a name for myself in the automotive industry, which is effectively dominated by men but is not theirs alone, as my experience shows. After several years working at the company, José Muñoz, Nissan Mexico's president at the time, asked me if I wanted to be the first woman to sit on the board of directors. I immediately said yes without hesitation and without having the slightest idea about what the position entailed. I remember asking myself at that critical moment in my life if I should take the elevator to see where it takes me, or stay on the same floor. I took the elevator.I believe that women must acknowledge that we can do anything we want. We are just as capable as men but, sadly, many women still don't realize this, be it for lack of self-confidence or due to gender barriers. Let me assure you that if I succeeded, anyone can succeed as well. That's how I came to hold my current position as president and CEO of Nissan Mexico. I am proud to say that I finally broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first woman at Nissan to lead a country's operations in more than 83 years. It was a big achievement and, yes, I think I can go even further. Many people have asked me if I have finally seen my life dream come true, to which I answer no. I keep living my dream, every day of my life. The only difference is that now I feel empowered to make changes to help other women have the opportunities I did not have at the start of my career. I have always said that if my life story inspires just one girl, one female college student, or one woman in an executive position, I will have accomplished one of my life goals, and this is something I see in my daughter's eyes every day. I want her to be whoever she wants to be. I want her to help other women and to be inspired by her life choices – because women need to support and empower each other in our collective pursuit of a better life and future.New at the top - Mayra GONZALEZ @23MayraGonzalez #WFGM16 pic.twitter.com/r2ca9QWji3— Women's Forum (@Womens_Forum) December 1, 2016At the 2016 Women's Forum in France, the Renault-Nissan Alliance will have one public speaker and will host two sessions:Dec. 1, 16:50-17:05: Mayra Gonzalez, President and Managing Director, Nissan Mexico will participate in the plenary session "New at the Top."Dec. 1, 12:20-13:05: The Renault-Nissan Alliance will host a Corner session by "les Pionnières" on "Entrepreneurial spirit: Women on the move"Dec. 2, 10:45-11:30: The Renault-Nissan Alliance will also host a session on "Executive Presentations: Standing Out and Building your Personal Brand" by Jane Goodman, executive consultant & coach.#WF15 Best Of Women's Forum Global Meeting 2015 # # #

The case for reviving Mitsubishi Motors – by Carlos Ghosn
by News Feeder, 20-10-2024, 02:47 PM
In his latest LinkedIn Influencer post, Renault-Nissan Alliance CEO Carlos Ghosn says that Nissan had a clear choice when considering its acquisition of a stake in Mitsubishi Motors: Sever ties with its longtime partner, or choose to support its revival. "We chose the latter," writes Ghosn. Read all of Ghosn's LinkedIn posts here. The alliance strategy that saved Nissan from bankruptcy nearly two decades ago is inspiring the revival of Mitsubishi Motors. In 1999, Nissan partnered with Renault to create the Renault-Nissan Alliance. By joining forces, Nissan achieved a historic turnaround. Over the subsequent 17 years, both companies have grown stronger together. As Mitsubishi Motors faced the repercussions of misreporting fuel-economy figures earlier this year, Nissan had a clear choice: Sever ties with its longtime partner, or choose to support its revival. We chose the latter, for three primary reasons:It was a strategic opportunity: With Mitsubishi Motors, annual sales of the Renault-Nissan Alliance will reach 10 million units by the end of this fiscal year, putting the Alliance in the ranks of the top three global automotive groups. That gives us the economies of scale to compete with our largest competitors and maintain a significant advantage over the smaller ones.Mitsubishi's strengths complement Nissan's: We will focus on realizing synergies through joint purchasing, deeper localization, joint plant utilization, common vehicle platforms, technology-sharing and an expansion of our combined presence in both mature and emerging markets. And those synergies – which we define as actions that reduce costs and investments, avoid costs and investments, or increase revenue – are significant. We believe in the strength of partnership: We also believe in the power of second chances. When Nissan was struggling 17 years ago, Renault offered a hand up. We know what it's like to face a crisis and emerge stronger. But unlike Nissan in 1999, Mitsubishi Motors has a healthy balance sheet; what's missing is its customers' trust. By addressing the root causes of the crisis and re-earning its customers' trust, Mitsubishi Motors can be sustainably successful. It will need to be done by Mitsubishi Motors itself – there is nothing Nissan or any outside entity can do to change the mindset or culture of another company. But Nissan can and will provide its skills and share its experiences from its own transformation. The Mitsubishi Board of Directors, recognizing the significant transformation necessary, asked me to take on the role of Chairman of Mitsubishi Motors. In that oversight role, I will support CEO Osamu Masuko and Chief Operating Officer Trevor Mann, who will handle day-to-day operations of the company. By serving as Chairman, I can help ensure Mitsubishi Motors benefits from and contributes to the Alliance.Nissan and Renault will benefit as well from this new partnership, starting immediately with savings from joint purchasing. Other examples will include the ability to leverage Mitsubishi's know-how in Japan's popular kei car segment, to adopt Mitsubishi's systems for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, to capitalize on its strength in pickup trucks, and to build on its successful operations in Southeast Asia.We believe the synergies will return 10 percent of Nissan's investment in 2017 already and more than 20 percent the year after. As our partnership grows in the years to come, we will identify additional synergies at the regional level, as well as explore specific benefits for Renault and our other partners.Of course, the success of any alliance is never guaranteed. Others have tried and failed. But the Renault-Nissan Alliance has 17 years of experience that we can apply to this next challenge in our unique and successful story of global, cross-cultural cooperation. In the process, we expect to utilize our new scale and leverage Mitsubishi Motors' assets to deliver new technologies and better vehicles to our customers around the world. This is a time of change and unpredictability in the auto industry, as new technologies and new players promise to disrupt the status quo. One thing we know from experience is that we can do far more with the right partner than we can achieve alone.I'm excited and confident about our prospects as we embark down the road to Mitsubishi Motors' revival.Related: Nissan strengthens Alliance with acquisition of 34% stake in Mitsubishi Motors # # #
