My how to build a PC

Hi guys copied this over from another website where I was asked to do a how to build a PC thread as many members wanted to but didn't have the confidence/know-how to go about it so hopefully this will help.

First things first guys - This is purely a tutorial of how I built my pc, those who wish to follow my guide for their own purposes are doing so at their own risk

Right now that's out the way, I've seen many people on here asking about pc's but not really having the experience or confidence to do it, this is why i'm creating this thread and using my expertise to show you guys how easy it is. I also want to apologise for the quality of the pics they are from my phone.

Tools required - screw driver, pliers and patience

The beginning
Right guys i'm presuming you already have your components, for this build i've spent just under £1k and here are my specs and a quick pic (excluding dvdrw drive and case)

-Antec300 case
-Corsair 750w psu
-Gigabyte UD4P intel 1366 i7 motherboard
-Intel i7 920 cpu
-3x2gb Corsair XMS pc10666 ddr3 trichannel ram
-Gainward Nvidia 280GTX 1024mb gfx card
-Maxtor SATA 500gb hard drive
-Pioneer Multi-layer SATA DVDrw drive

Part -1 here we go no turning back.
Put your pc case on a flat surface and remove the side panel to allow you access to the inside of your case, now remove the case default io plate and clip in the new one that came with your motherboard.


Part -2 Motherboard stand-offs and Motherboard
So now you have your io plate installed it's time to install the standoffs that came with your case, screw these into your case using the applicable wholes depending on your motherboard and orientation you wish to use and tighten with a pair of pliers (highly recommended):


Now comes the time to install the motherboard, firstly earth yourself by touching the case (this will reduce static and possible shocking the motherboard and killing it), now place the motherboard onto the stand-offs and screw in using screws that came with your case they should have a attached hexagonal washer.


Part -3 Cpu, Ram & Cooler
Now open up your cpu socket and remove the plastic protection plate if there is one (consult your motherboard manual for further info), with the cpu carefully place it onto the socket (for orientation info consult motherboard manual), intel cpu's have 2 notches on each side making it easier to line up the cpu-


Now insert your ram into the corresponding slots (again consult motherboard manual for correct slots as motherboards do vary as I later find out), open up the ram slots by pressing down on the ram clips on the motherboard and insert your ram into the slots make sure the notch on the ram lines up with the notch on your motherboard. Press firmly down and the ram clips will secure the ram -


Now install your cpu cooler according to the instructions that came with your cpu or if you have a after market cpu cooler follow those, i'm using the stock intel cooler for now which is easy to install by just pushing down on the 4 clips in the wholes around the cpu on the motherboard and also connected the power cable to the motherboard cpu_fan pins.


Part 4 - Dvd drive and wiring your front panel
Now comes installing your optical drive, for this you may need to remove the other side panel and front panel removing the case blanking plate. For the dvd drive ive only secured it using a total of 2 screws in opposite corners on each side


Now wireing your front panel (power and reset switches, hard drive led and power led), you should see thin coloured wires that come from the front of your case, (consult your motherboard manual for correct places to connect these) push firmly down onto the pins with each wire *TIP* - start at the top and work down, at this time you can also connect up any front panel headphone cables and usb cables again following your motherboard manual for layout details.


Part 5 - Power Supply and Hard Drive(s)
Now with my case I have a bottom fit powersupply, the location of this on your case should be fairly obvious, main thing to make sure is that the fan is pointing into the case. Slide your psu into your case and screw it in on the back of the case in the 4 corners (i used thumb screws for this).


Slide your hard drives into the desired slots in your case and using the smaller screws (again I used thumb screws), I advise screwing in all 4 screws (2 on each side) this can reduce noise and vibration.

Note in this picture I have also connected my 24pin (largest cable) + 8pin motherboard power connectors

Part 6 - Connecting DVDdrive, Hard drive to Motherboard
Depending on your drives you will either be using SATA or IDE cables to connect your DVD drive and hard drive to your motherboard, (in my case i've used SATA cables) connect one sata cable to your motherboards SATA port 0 and the other end to your hard drive, now connect your dvd drive to SATA port 1. Connect up your power connectors to each of these also either using the 4pin molex adapters or SATA adapters in my instance.


Part 7 - Graphics Card
Firstly remove the pci bracket(s) where your gfx card is going to sit (in my case it's in the first PCI-Express slot), gently slot your graffics card in with the monitor ports toward the rear of the case push down firmly so the gfx card is flush with the other pci brackets on the case.
Connect up your power cables to your gfx card, my card requires a 8pin and 6pin power cable due to the power of it.

(Ignore the random circle at the top of the picture this was covered in step 6)

Part 8 - It's Do or Die time
Connect up any case fans you have by using one of the spare molex connectors, and try to keep cables as tidy as possible to help airflow/temps.

Ok guys the moment of truth, firstly flick the switch on the back of the case and allow a minute or so for power to go through the motherboard (your board may light up to show it has power) and connect up your monitor to your gfx card-

Now press your power button on the front of your case and your pc should start to boot up (note upon first boot it may take longer than normal for a response to come up on screen)-

Success my PC has booted and within 30secs my bios screen came up -


Lastly connect up any case fans you have by using one of the spare molex connectors, and try to keep cables as tidy as possible to help airflow/temps.

That's it folks time to install windows, if anyone has any support questions or queries feel free to drop me a pm also if anyone wants me to clarify anything.

Well been to the interview together for a job locally.

went well answered all questions, and to be honest cant think on a better to answer them ethier.

i got lucky, i got there early and was sat outside the office, and another interview was taking place and guess what i heard it all, which means i knew the questions before going into the interview, of which i had answers already prepared ! :grin:

there must be desparate and he said the succesful canditate will be contacted today between 5pm-7pm, so heres me with all my telephone lines and mobile on available lol

When setting up a private network of 5 PCs behind an Internet Router, what IP address ranges have been reserved for such use. Which would you pick, and why?

A customer is offering his WRX for £1200, bargin but what is there to look for on an old car like his, I think it is a "T" reg. I wouldn't mind it as a 2nd car run around.
