not familiar with that as I've only recently got a gmail account for my android.
But having used the chatbox for a few minutes, I think at minimum it needs the ability to make the open tab flash or scroll across that you have a message or something. So you could have it open in a seperate window without having to keep opening it every 30 seconds to check for messages

Its not a direct to one person thing like FB, everyone is chatting to everyone all day long ... there's sometimes more than one conversation going on.. ppl will get really annoyed if they get beeped everytime anyone types anything

Yee that's what I was thinking. So you can just have it open in a seperate tab, but the text changes from 'Outlaw Jap Club Forum - Chat Box' to 'New Message'. Something you can see but isn't too in your face.
