HTC Desire Z - my new phone - steviewevie - 07-10-2018 Just received my new phone (ordered from Amazon.co.uk), an HTC Desire Z : ![]() It's running Android 2.2 (Froyo), with HTC's Sense add-ons. This is my first Android phone, after being on Windows Mobile 6.5. I'm planning to stick with the stock ROM for a bit, since I'm new to Android and need to get used to it. I will root the phone so that I can install apps that need root capability, but won't worry about being able to flash custom ROMs just yet. Initial impressions of the phone are good, it looks and feels very solidly built. Currently it's just charging up, I will need to move my contacts/calendar etc over to it. More info from me as I get to use it more ! HTC Desire Z - my new phone - parthiban - 07-10-2018 Nice one mate, so did you buy it SIM-free then? Yep the HTCs don't really need to be played about with that much, the ROMs are well designed, you probably won't necessarily even need to root it for normal use. I'd be interested to hear whether you find a huge difference between typing on a physical keyboard vs. the on-screen one (and even Swype) - never had a phone with a physical keyboard so wondering whether my next should have one or not. HTC Desire Z - my new phone - steviewevie - 07-10-2018 Yep, I bought it SIM-free from Amazon. I'm still locked into my current Vodafone contract, too soon to upgrade. But as soon as I can, I'll switch to a 12-month SIM-only contract, so I don't get locked into another 24 months. Yeah I realise I won't need root for normal use. Just that my IT background is in Unix, which is what Android/Linux are based on, so I fancied a play, I've already installed the Android SDK on my PC ![]() I'm the opposite to you in that I've never had a touch-screen phone without a physical keyboard. Whether my need to have one is based on reality or just that I "feel" I need one, I'm not sure ! There are some horrible physical keyboards around (e.g. the Motorola ones), HTC seem to have sussed how to make nice ones. The CPU runs at 800 MHz at stock (but newer generation CPU than a lot of the older 1 GHz CPUs, so runs faster than them). Even though overclocking up to more than twice that speed (!) is already available, I'll stay at stock speed at the moment - I'm sure it'll feel a lot faster and slicker than my old phone, and I don't want to spoil myself too soon ! HTC Desire Z - my new phone - Lexusboy - 07-10-2018 Must say it looks very nice Steve... As you know ive had apple iphones for years but love the htc i have. The only downside is the battery life, this area even though the iphone is not great it still beats the htc.. Anyway i hope you enjoy your phone... HTC Desire Z - my new phone - FirebirdPhil - 07-10-2018 looks good, I love my HTC Desire, simple to use and doesn't need fiddling with to work. HTC Desire Z - my new phone - parthiban - 07-10-2018 steviewevie Yeah I realise I won't need root for normal use. Just that my IT background is in Unix, which is what Android/Linux are based on, so I fancied a play, I've already installed the Android SDK on my PC Ahh good stuff, now I know who to contact if I end up doing something to my phone that I can't fix! Lol, your last one had a resistive touch screen though didn't it? On those you do need a physical keyboard, with a capacitive one it should be a lot closer, so will be interesting to see how you feel using both. The big difference though is that you still have the full screen as you don't lose half of it for the keyboard. And LBs right, although my battery life is vastly improved with the latest Froyo, the iPhone 4 is on another level in terms of battery management - hopefully within the next year or so android phones will be able to match that
HTC Desire Z - my new phone - steviewevie - 07-10-2018 On the battery front, it's too early to tell for me, obviously. Though from reading the forums, people with Desire Zs have got amazing battery life when overclocking their phones - i.e. also with the phone underclocking itself when it's not being used (why don't they do this as standard ?). HTC Desire Z - my new phone - parthiban - 07-10-2018 steviewevie (why don't they do this as standard ?) Yep these are the bits slowly getting ironed out with Android but it is true - part of it is I think they can't be bothered to do it and leave it to the devs to come up with innovative solutions!
HTC Desire Z - my new phone - parthiban - 08-10-2018 Marsdendean Been looking into a Desire HD, but been told they have loads of problems so may go for one of these What sort of problems? My brother's been thinking of getting one too so may have to warn him
HTC Desire Z - my new phone - parthiban - 10-10-2018 Marsdendean I'm unsure. I know the manager at Phone4you in Manchester, my Mrs is best friends with his girlfriend. Cheers mate, yeah let me know if you find anything out
