Yip mate black absorbs heat can't see it making too much diff though...

Dark Samurai Black does absorb heat.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Black absorbs ALL light which in turn creates heat and makes the object black in the first place (as no light is reflected to the eye). However in an environment completely sealed from light, a pipe painted black will be no hotter than a pipe painted white.

Someone feel free to prove me wrong with sources though?

Big Grin I look in to check if he's rebuilt the supercharger and find a debate on physics going on Big Grin

Just to throw some more wood on the fire:

lol. Good example in that link tho with the engine. Makes sense why most plastics in engine bays are white then I guess.

I haven't read through the attached links, but off the top of my head I think the colour black absorbs infrared waves (the ones that make stuff hot). However I really don't think it would be anything to get 'hot and bothered' about Wink

Black is very good at dissipating heat as well,

Phil01 Black is very good at dissipating heat as well,

Which is why I'd guess most heatsinks are made from black anodised aluminium?

Its really very simple:

There are only three ways for heat to move from one place to another: conduction, convection, radiation.

Conduction is molecules crashing into each other. If one side of a material is hotter than the other, heat can be conducted through.

Convection is molecules carrying energy through a liquid or gas. Hot air rising is an example of convection.

Radiation is light waves passing from one material to another. Incandescent light bulbs emit radiation because the wire within is heated.

Color has no effect on conduction or convection
. It does, however, affect radiation. Material looks dark if it absorbs most of the light that hits it. A material that cannot absorb radiation will reflect it to your eyes, making the material look like the color of the light. If a surface absorbs most of the light hitting it, the surface heats up quickly - basic law of conservation of energy:lol:

Looks like my double A's in science haven't worn of quite yet then Wink

Good example/proof of this is those solar water heating tubes you put on your roof. Guess what colour they are...?
