Thought I'd post this in here rather than the SPC thread where this was raised. Stav, you said you were going for a turbo blanket with your big single. Can I ask why ? I've heard both pros and cons for these.

Basically the understanding i have is, the more heat you can keep in, the lower the spool should be.

So if you wrap the manifold (or ceramic coat which im looking into), blanket the hot side of the turbo, and wrap the down pipe the turbo should spool quicker, so full boost lower down the revs.

one like this:

Doesn't the use of the blanket mean you cook your turbo and shorten its life though ? Not saying that's definitely true, but as I said I've heard both pros and cons.

AFAIK a well built ball bearing turbo shouldnt have any problems.

but its a good question ill have to do some diggin.

Just been doing some digging and ive seen a few points.

basically the blanket shouldnt cover the bearings only the hot side so there shouldnt be a problem.

ok, fair enough, I just don't see how keeping it hots makes it spool quicker. Wouldn't you have to keep the gases moving, keeping it spinning more, to make it spool more quickly ?

I'm probably missing something though.

AFAIK its something to do with hot gases expanding more.

so theres more flow through the turbine than the same revs with colder gases.

so at 3k rpm with colder gases the car maybe wont be at boost.
but with hotter gases at the same rpm, theres more volume of gas (cause its expanded more) so that leads to more flow through the turbine and hopefully boost at a lower rpm.

Marsdendean I thought that was the point in anti lag? to keep the gasses and hence spooling lower and most of the time?

normally when you rev a turbo car at standstill you wont get any boost cause theres no load on the turbo (its not trying to move the car).
Antilag (or lauch control) works by retarding the timing of the engine. (which isnt great for the car but acceptable in short periods.)
The retarded timing produces hotter gases so once again you get boost at standstill. so then when you set off your already boosting so you dont have to wait for the turbo to spool up like normal.

Thats how it works on my car anyway.

Ah ok, thanks !

thats how i understand it anyway.

seems to make sense
