I'm probably missing something, but I don't get what it's going to do that you can't already do with instant messaging software (apart from the character-by-character bit).

I honestly don't know a lot about it but I think it's a way of centralising all your communication methods (email, IM, etc) to just have one tool that does it all.
I think it's supposed to resemble an address book, with every kind of conversation relating to each contact in one place - so an email would be alongside an IM conversation and you can tie all your communication together.

The trouble with that is though that everyone else needs to be running Google Wave too, for that to work - and in the meantime you have to carry on using existing email and IM tools to other contacts who aren't using Google Wave. I think that will hold it back.

Yep that's probably true that unless everyone is using google wave it doesn't work.......
