Depends what you want really.
The lakes are amazing, Some nice boutique hotels for a quite weekend
The big cities for shopping, London for the sites (Buckingham palace etc)
But the smaller cities like York have nice sites as well

York is a traditional city with alot of history, Leeds have a good amount of site and isnt too far from each other with Harrogate in the middle again beautiful country to see.
London does have the sites but is expensive in my eyes and only worth it if your going for things like a show and the big sites.
