Need help on course entry requirements - Saraj - 24-03-2018
Hi, as many of you know I have been looking at doing a course within the nuclear area with a view to get onto the nuclear graduate scheme.
Blackpool are looking unlikely to offer the course, which is a shame as the course leader has confirmed via my CV that I am able to do to course.
So instead I applied at Lake College (2.5 hours drive away) to do it on a part time basis once a week.
They have turned around and said I cant due to my qualifications, only ones they asked me over the phone.
Now UCAS state the following for the course:
Quote:Specific entry requirements for this course are:
• The equivalent of one A2 level at Grade ‘D’ or above in Science or Technology.
• Plus 5 GCSE’s (including a numerate subject at level C or above)
An example of equivalence is an NC in a technical or numerate discipline.
Other acceptable qualifications include:
Scottish Certificate of Education Higher Grade
Irish Leaving Certificate Higher Grade
International Baccalaureate and European Baccalaureate
BTEC National Certificate/Diploma
Kite marked Access Course
Students holding/completing a relevant Higher Certificate or HNC may be offered advanced entry/transfer to the course. All students holding/completing a relevant University Certificate can access/transfer to this FdSc.
Applications from individuals with non-standard qualifications, relevant work or life experience and who can demonstrate the ability to cope with and benefit from degree-level studies are welcome. If you have not studied recently you may need to undertake an Access programme first. For details of those offered by the University or the College, please contact Enquiry Management, tel: 01772 892400 (University) or 01946 839300 (College)
These are the qualifications I hold:
GCSE Science: Double Award DD
OCA Level 2 Criminology PASS
GCSE D&T: Resistant Materials Technology B
OCB Level 3 Criminology PASS
GCSE English D
ABC Level 2 Counselling Concepts PASS
GCSE English Literature C
NVQ level 2 Business Administration PASS
GCSE History E
BTECH Fd Policing PASS
GCSE Information and Communication Technology D
Key Skills Working With Others PASS
GCSE Mathematics C
Key Skills
Improving Own Learning and Performance PASS
GCSE Religious Studies – Islam C
Key Skills Application Of Number PASS
GCSE Media Studies D
Key Skills Information Technology PASS
GCSE Human Physiology D
GCSE Psychology D
I also got 6 years work experiance, and 1 year studying a Fd in Criminology but due to family committments couldnt complete that course.
What do you think? Ok I do not have a qualification in science or tech apart from my GCSE's but it does say, if non-standard quallications, such as myself, I have to demonstrate I can do the course?
or am I seeing this all wrong?

It looks on paper that you don't have the qualifications if I'm reading it right, I guess you could appeal and try to argue your case though?

Yeah on paper it doesnt, but when it says:
Quote:Applications from individuals with non-standard qualifications, relevant work or life experience and who can demonstrate the ability to cope with and benefit from degree-level studies are welcome
Surely they should consider me on this merit?

Yep I agree, did they just say a flat no when you spoke to them? I'd ask for reasons or otherwise try and arrange a meeting with someone who can make a decision.

She asked me if I had any Level 3, which i stated criminology, and then she asked for Science, I said just GCSE's.
She said she'll speak to the tutor and get back to me, and thats the answer, and they recommended I did a level 3 science before enrolling onto the Fd, they also have changed my UCAS application status to withdrawn now.
Im going to email them I think, I just needed a third person opinion on it.
Thanks mate

No probs, they can't make a statement like that and then not give you an opportunity to explain why you'd be good for the course - make sure someone takes the time to at least see you!

ive sent the email to student services appealing against the decision.
the course is run by UCLAN via Lakes College, and UCLAN's entry requirements are different from the college, so I have pointed this out, as UCLAN's are more favoring to me.

Right got this reply, I am right in saying they saying no cause I got to travel a distance?
Quote:Dear Mr Ull-Din,
Thank you for your query and interest in the foundation degree in nuclear decommissioning.
The entry requirements displayed on UCLan’s website are generic in nature – individual courses have their own specific minimum requirements and Lakes College, in partnership with UCLan, state the following:
Specific entry requirements for this course are:
• The equivalent of one A2 level at Grade ‘D’ or above in Science or Technology.
• Plus 5 GCSE’s (including a numerate subject at level C or above)
An example of equivalence is a BTEC National Certificate in a technical or numerate discipline.

Applications from individuals that do not meet the standard academic requirements can only be considered from those people with considerable work experience within the nuclear industry, where their line managers have agreed to support the student through the course. Other colleges that offer the foundation degree may choose to state different requirements on the basis of support options available.
Although your C.V. clearly shows your capabilities as a student, I would be reluctant to offer a placement on the course to anyone having to travel such distances: the part-time course is only one day per week but the formal delivery starts at 08:15 and finishes at 20:45 – demanding enough as it stands, let alone without having to consider an additional 4 hours of commuting.
If you have any further queries about the foundation degree in nuclear decommissioning, please do not hesitate in contacting me directly as I am the course leader for this Lakes College qualification.
With kind regards,
Nick Evanson
