Yeah people say the bolts on the trim strips break a lot but I've never had it... I did replace all of those on my car recently though. Not sure I've seen that much rust on the front end of a MK2!

Good progress

Dont worry, it wont be there long! Im gonna attack it with a wire wheel in the angle grinder tomorrow night

All nuts and bolts will be copper greased when refitted, and any that could be exposed to the elements will have a dab of vaseline to stop them rusting again

Well remember your safety glasses, gloves and ear plugs when using the grinder. You have been warned :Bazza::Bazza: from someone who uses them every working day :tongue_smilie:

Looks like your doing a good restoration on it mate, quite a bit of rust there for the age of the motor,Confusedhock: its one of the jobs i used to enjoy when i had my Mini's, removing all the rusty bits and either painting them up or replacing the parts with new ones  going to be a tidy motor when you've sorted it mate :thumbup1:

Nah im not afraid to strip cars apart and get my hands dirty. I wasnt expecting to see the rust, but then it is a 15 year old UK car. I wasnt planning on any of this, but after seeing the state the radiator was in theres no point in delaying it, while i have the car off the road i might as well get it all done.

Either way, on the 30th, the omega comes off the road, so this has to be done or i have no way of getting to work.

Funds wise things are very tight, well non existant. My pay has been delayed this month, so i dont even have the money to pay for the rear calipers at the minute, so things are a bit desperate. Hopefully my old man will come to the rescue. If not, ill have a 22 mile walk to work

Bit more progress tonight. Im knackered so ill let the photo's do the talking

Rad off. The water that came out was black, almost like old oil, so i will be flushing the system out before refitting

Gave the rusty wits a wire brush off

Quick Mask up to stop overspray

and voila

Rad fan was crusty

Quick wire brush off

And a brush over with hammerite

That'll do for tonight
