So, weeks and weeks later Mark is finally given the ok to come back to work, albeit not on a fulltime basis to start with. I'd have to agree that standing up waving paint guns in a sealed booth all day probably isn't the ideal profession right after major heart surgery.
I haven't really told you about the paint.. I spent six months trying to find the right shade of purple for me. I wanted a cadburys purple, the inner wrapper of a dairy milk bar ideally.. something in your face purple .. but purple not pinky purple or bluey purple or reddy purple. I love the Skyline purple in sunshine and close up .. but from a distance and on a dull day it could easily be mistaken for black and I wanted something that said from five miles away Whoooaaaaa Purple!
I couldn't find anything that really matched the colour in my mind so in the end we went custom made. I found something the shade I wanted and we had it matched and reproduced.. one very happy witch ? Yes you'd think so wouldn't you .. well ..
No!
Mark collected the paint and began on some of the panels of my car. His words when trying to tell me about the results were along the lines of 'The stiggin stuff just falls off'. He had to call me asap as I was due up there later that day to see how it looked on the primer and make sure I didn't want it on a darker one. I was also going to decide on the quantity of metalflake I wanted in the paintwork. Yes I wanted a sparkly car. We weren't going to use actual flake, too big and too rough. I wanted a fine dust that wouldn't really show in normal light generally but would come to life in sunshine and lights.
He was really really unhappy about the finish and was not going to put his name to it so he called the paint maker. Apparently, they couldn't make this colour without using chemicals that would only make it able to bind well on small surfaces like a motorbike. I am still shocked that it didn't occur to them a bodyshop might be buying paint for a car .. especially when the quantity being discussed was clearly enough to paint an entire chapter of hells angels bikes .. sixty times over .. and their neighbours!
So the specially designed self falling off paint went back and we started again with different paint partners. I got summoned up to see it on a spare bonnet (they'd tried it on a big panel lol to make sure it actually stuck). They'd sampled out various effects into the paint in the hope that we could agree on it that day and things could progress quickly. Unfortunately it was a dull overcast day and the full effects of my original suggestions couldn't be seen easily. I had four guys lifting a bonnet of a car in the air tilting it every which way possible to try and catch some light in the carpark. I was pretty useless at deciding because it was just too funny to watch and the rest of the industrial estate were quite amused too. However, when they rested it back on stands I spent ages trying to wipe off the dust hoping that would improve the picture. Eventually after they had had a giggle they pointed out it wasn't working as that 'dust' was my powdered metalflake in this paint. It was horrid, it showed all the time and really just looked dirty. So we scrapped the silver powder and chose another option which was one of the samples they'd done and I loved it. You'll have to wait and see it! :p
You won't see the paint effect in these pictures, I don't know if one of our excellent OJC photographers will catch it but it has to be seen in the flesh to really appreciate it. There are however my personalisation effects to come ... later
For now, we've agreed the main colour so the bits go into the paint booths:
The bodyshops camera has a tendancy to make everything look bluer than it is. I had mild cardiac myself when they sent me the first picture of the shell and it looked a perfect shade of royal blue!! I was on the phone so quick BT got whiplash and up there first thing the next morning to check the car myself lol
I am most relieved I didn't visit at this stage of it's painting. I have seen nicer cars in a scrap yard!
Don't my tyres look pretty lol .. Anyway finally a picture really reflecting the vibrant colour :
This was the first point for me where I really thought, Yes!! I am going to love this
Sorry forgot this one, should have been on post 117
