Too small compared to what though ?

It all depends on what you're trying to achieve with the turbo. It has been suggested before to me that my turbo is too small, but I don't agree. Time will tell if I'm right or not. I don't want to get something purely for the maximum possible power, I want something that's going to drive nicely, not with the turbo taking a while to get going and then coming in with full boost very quickly.

As Stav says, although there are six cylinders they're smaller cylinders than on a 4-cylinder car with the same capacity, so surely the exhaust gases are going to have the same sort of volume ?

There have been some early IS200 turbos that used a Garrett GT28BB turbo that apparently drove very well, and my GT2560R is very similar in spec to that old GT28BB.

Also, Garrett changed the naming conventions of their turbos. I wonder if sometimes people think my turbo is "small" just because it starts with a "25". My turbo has a bigger compressor wheel than some GT28s, and only a fractionally smaller turbine wheel than the 28s.

All input is welcomed though. If it turns out that my turbo is too small, then I will be the first to admit it

Garrett rate it at 200 to 330 bhp, and for engines between 1.6 and 2.5 litres. It gets to maximum efficiency at just over 1.0 bar, but even at 0.5 bar it's pretty high up on that chart, and at 0.75 bar it's only a fraction off maximum efficiency.

For the bigger turbos, running at about 260 bhp or so would be right at the bottom of the range where Garrett rates them, which doesn't sound like the best use of them to me.

I don't know exactly which turbo is in the SPC demo car, and the installation is a very nice and expertly done one, but the way that it drives isn't for me. The turbo seems too big to me, in that nothing seems to happen whatsoever until 3500 rpm, and then the turbo gets onto full boost very quickly. Sure, that's a lot of fun but it's not something that I'd want for a daily driver. This is of course just a personal preference from me about how I'd like the car to drive, and the choice of turbo will alter the driving characteristics a lot, I would think.

Looking at the figures above then Stevie, your turbo is about the same as the one fitted to mine, most say the standard turbo on mine is good for 330-350bhp running upto 0.85 bar, but the standard setup for it is 0.5 bar upto 5000rpm then 0.7bar upto 7000rpm+ Big Grin

So if yours reacts in the same way as mine you'll have a nice boost range with the choice to have a lot of fun or drive it normally, and it'll be a nice daily driver which is what you want :thumbup1:

Epic thread Stevie, looks good and great news about the engine, you must've been 'peeved' when they told you the HG was dead!!

I'm with you on turbo sizing, I think with the torque you get from having a 6-pot combined with that turbo you'll be laughing. I would take Garrett's bhp figures with a pinch of salt though, not sure I've ever seen someone hit anywhere near the maximum figures they quote.

I appreciate it's a bit late now (and apart from internals you're using all new parts) but you probably could have used MR2 injectors, they are 540cc as standard on the later engines!! A hidden gem if you like, they are vastly overspecced! ISTR S13 injectors are only 330cc, for example.

Also I'd recommend you put ARP studs in for the head, they're not too expensive (£110?) and the last thing you want is head lift later on in life when you put a bigger turbo on it (happens on some medium to high powered '2s and I doubt the Lexus studs are very different). I never intend to run much past 350fwbhp but have been putting ARP stuff in wherever I can because it just doesn't fail.

Good luck Smile I hope it all comes together as nicely as your planning deserves.

Interesting. According to the Power Enterprise injectors chart here, the ones for the MR2 appear to be a slightly different type (especially looking at the pics), are you sure they would fit ? Also the MR2 ones appear to only have 2 holes whereas the IS200 ones have 4 ? I have got the same type that the Altezza uses, which I believe are the right ones.

steviewevie Engine bay cooling/power steering hoses :

I had always been a bit puzzled about where all these hoses in this kit (looking at pics in the past) were supposed to go. I took them out to the car to compare them to the OEM hoses, and it became obvious. So I thought I'd share the info, in case it's useful.

The top two hoses, the thickest ones, are for the coolant. The smaller one goes into the top of the radiator at the front. The long one goes from the water pump down to the bottom of the rad.

The middle two hoses (noticeable, though not from my pic, in that they have a black lining and not the ordinary red one) are for the power steering, the inlet and outlet for the reservoir.

The bottom two hoses go at the back of the engine bay, and are the inlet and outlet for the heater. I wonder whether these will be useable and/or need wrapping due to the location of the turbo/manifold ? I guess time will tell.

Here mate, there is a thread regarding the injectors. There was a German guy who had a turbo Lexus IS200 and he has written a small review of the injectors he used.
