Nice car, and a good story. The alternator failing must have been a pain, not the most accessible of things on the MR2.

2tongues Nice car, and a good story. The alternator failing must have been a pain, not the most accessible of things on the MR2.

Not too bad, doing the decat was worse. The biggest pain in the arse with the alternator was that the failing alternator killed the battery, and then the failing battery killed the 1st replacement alternator. So I had 3 alternators and 2 batteries within 6 weeks! Alternators are a common failure on the MR2 as the rocker cover seal on the turbo engine is atrocious and due to the mounting angle oil runs down from the rocker cover straight into the alternator.

I was close to posting up on LOC when you had your alternator failure. The first alternator I got supplied was too small as you described, so that the adjuster bolt didn't quite line up. Turned out that was a Celica alternator, the supplier had obviously looked up the engine code and found it in a UK GT4 and worked it out from there. It was badged 5S-FE (2.2l engine which went in low spec US MR2s) but is the same part. However I now know the correct part number for the Unipoint alternator for Rev3+ engines, which gets you a brand new (non refurb) alternator with a guarantee and next day delivery for £100.

Yeah I figured you'd just go back to TGT so my Unipoint part numbers wouldn't have been any use to you. They're just a tad expensive from Toyota eh? Smile
