DaveEdin Sounds like an issue with getting DNS addresses to resolve from IP addresses... Presumably she's using Windows, in which case it's worth checking her network settings - is it set to allow the network gateway to act as a DHCP server? If not, then this might allow her to correctly resolve the network addresses..
I'm no network admin, but this is all I can think of to check...

Yeah this setting can be different for different network connections, though it should default to allowing the host to act as DHCP server.
Did the university's tech support look over the connection setup (asking as they should know more about this than me :lol
Yeah it's a network setup issue rather than anything to do with wireless, as Dave said.
DaveEdin Did the university's tech support look over the connection setup (asking as they should know more about this than me :lolYeah they did but they sound completely useless, although my sister is completely clueless when it comes to computers too so it's possible that she's not explaining very well as she claims they said the problem was something to do with RAM
Lexusboy What about her mobile does that connect ok of course that if she has one out there?Good point, don't think she tried that out, will have to get her to check it out if she ever goes back with all this ash in the air!
steviewevie Yeah it's a network setup issue rather than anything to do with wireless, as Dave said.Cool, don't think I'll bother taking it back to Sony then as it doesn't sound like the laptop is at fault.
