yea need to do that - I should have a replacement LSD tomorrow then just need to fit it, the one they sent me first was a normal SE diff - cheeky monkeys thinking I wouldn't know the difference!!

Have finally got the the bottom of the low heat retention in my coolant. When driving as has been previously posted the temp of the coolant only gets to 55c that is with the whole of the radiator blanked off..... Toxo kindly gave me a hand bleeding the system of air and there was indeed a small amount of air stuck in the internal heater matrix, this raised the coolant temp a bit but not much - the best bit is the coolant doesn't get colder when driving now.

I had the thermostat and water pump replaced, this didn't help, so a little more investigation was required, the result of this is the thermostat housing that bolts onto the new water pump is warped, this part was cut and welded by ToyotaGT to align the heater hose from the bottom of the radiator, so there is a chance it was warped at that stage?? the warping is tiny but enough to allow water through the thermostat and into the engine, they seal with small rubber o ring inserts so it doesn't take much to have a leak .

I don't want to cover everything in black silicone as it is hard to get to the part and be 100% sure it is sealed properly. So I had a look for an in line thermostat, there are a few some cost 100's with casings made from Ally etc, then I found a Honda Civic part that will do the job, so £35 later I had a sort of in line thermostat from the local Honda dealer.

My local garage asked why I was putting a Freelander thermostat into my car????? Apparently Landrover use the same thermostats in the TD5 and Freelander petrol engines and they cost £11.50, so I returned the Civic one and bought a Freelander one - they are the SAME part from the same manufacturer, same part numbers etc. So often car manufacturers sell the same part for different prices, lucky this time I managed to save a few £'s..

My only issue now is fitting this thermostat, it looks like THIS The single pipe entry is the "cold" side and the other side is from the radiator, so when the coolant gets to 82C it starts to open and is fully open at 96c.

The angled pipe on the housing should go to the water pump on a TD5 (TD5's suck coolant and don't pump it in the way normal engines do), under heavy acceleration it opens a valve that allows coolant through even if coolant is not above the normal operating temp, the other one is the standard feed and operates the thermostat in the normal way.

Is it possible to join the 2 pipes on the "hot" end together, or would it be better just to some how blank off the angled pipe. If joining them would be best HOW????

Silly question, could you not just get the thermostat housing skimmed flat? Or is it too warped for that, or warped internally preventing a seal?

I would just blank off the extra pipe on the new external stat housing, it's of no use to you.

Can't skim it as there is only a tiny bit of a O ring run around and skimming would render the part useless.

So what do you think is happening ? That the coolant is always going via the radiator even when the coolant is cold already ? Wouldn't it still heat up but just take longer ?

IS200 Turbo project now just about complete ! See my thread here and leave your comments.
Now running standalone Syvecs ECU and no stock ECU !

The coolant comes from the engine, through the rad then to the OEM thermostat that is on the front of the engine. It takes 15 miles to warm up to 55C on tick over about 30 mins to get from 55 to 80 - when the fans cut in..

I am thinking about placing the in line 'stat just before the rad and leaving the OEM stat in place so that stops really cold coolant getting into the engine causing head gasket failure...
