Thanks everyone, I think the worst part really is how easy they got through that door - the sense of security that those types of doors are supposed to provide has just gone out the window and that's pretty scary. However that particular door has now got extra locks on it so at least that one feels more secure, and will be adding them to the others too.

We do have an alarm, and it was on so we're a bit confused as to what happened - the engineer's coming out to inspect it. If it appears it's not doing the job we'll have to get a new system, but we tested it when the police were here and it worked fine so we're all a bit baffled.

Interestingly they had turned around both the webcams in the house - assuming they may have been operating as CCTV I imagine. Can that actually be done?

But yeah we're looking at fitting CCTV on the outside of the house now, maybe 4 or 5 cameras looking round the perimeter - more than anything if it just acts as a deterrent that'll be good enough. Also we're going to put up higher fencing round the garden too, our side gates were locked so the way they got in was by going into the neighbours garden and then hopping the fence. Higher fencing won't necessarily stop it happening again, but it's another deterrent that might make them decide against trying it.

Yeah you can run CCTV software on most webcams. The only thing is that they obviously wont record anything useful at night, and your PC needs to be on in order for them to work. Also most of them record direct to the PC which is pretty pointless if the thieves nick the PC!

Best bet is to install the wireless IP ones, and put them in places that would require the thieves to walk a good distance and reach up high before they could get to them.

I also keep all of my valuables in a safe and dont leave car keys downstairs. I've also got some replica 'stuff' that makes loud noises and some long sharp things upstairs :whistling:

External CCTV (even dummies) and a new bell box is a good visual deterent

I installed a system around my house a few years ago, was worth it as I caught some **** trying the doors on every car on the avenue lol, made triple sure everything was locked tight each night after that

If you do look at getting CCTV think about lighting too as its very important to getting a good clear image. IR cameras are good but they should always be backed up with some sort of lighting to ensure you get the best image possible
