The significant thing there is that the sea water hasn't been pumped back out into the sea. It has pretty much destroyed the nuclear reactors though. The presence of salt creates a different set of isotopes to what you'd normally see with deionised water which are marginally more dangerous but you're still talking about stuff with a half-life of minutes (not dangerous for very long).
The general consensus is that while the rods were partially exposed, and the protective layer on the outside of some of them will have burnt through, none of it has got hot enough to properly melt the rods and cause them to drop into the containment chamber below (which would constitude a meltdown). Even if they did, because the inner chamber of the reactor hasn't been breached in any way, it would still be safe.
That's how I understand it anyway but I'm just an amateur!
Marsdendean ^^ did someone watch skyone last night. I think everyone just thinks money will sort the world out espesh large companies and governments. Agree with the leave to help people out, but come on Toyota gave workers 2 days off, it would take that long to travel there to help people out !

hmm cant remember from the last time i read it, i think it was circa 20 years perhaps.
I remember that they didnt really do anything with the toxic waste and whatever else was in the plant they just put a cement base round it and plonked a steel shell on to "keep it in"
as nuclear waste takes millions of years to degrade, its jsut as dangerous now as it was then,......
Im gunna go read up more now screw work!
Apparently there are plans for a new shelter to be built over the existing one, allowing workers to disamtle all 4 reactor cores and then dispense of the waste and decommision them totally, rendering the reactor sites "safe"
Although the current shelter was built in a hurry and has minor imperfections so radiation could have been leaking for years.
The msot concerning thing is at the time of the clear up alot of the radioactive waste transported from the reactor was dumped in barely sub-surface trenches dotted around the exclusion zone, which could eventually lead to some poor sod digging it up by accident and causing a europe wide catastrophy.
Seriously Japan handle this a tad better than russia did
Phil01 thanks john, like you an amateur but its nice to learn about new subjects.
how long do the rods stay hot for ?

So how hot are these rods?, seriously 3 to 6 months is a long time to cool something!!
shocking and our hearts go out to those tht are left behind in the mess.
