I work in IT, well I worked in IT til I lost my job on friday and well I recently sorted out a dept laptop and it had 3152 infections! As for usage, I think it depends upon the company really. Are they providing you with a dongle for net access or are you paying for the net access yourself and then connecting to their network from home via citrix or a vpn? If connecting via citrix then they will know what you are doing but this is something done whilst you are already on the net, same if you were via a VPN so we'd need more details tbh.

If its just web browsing, use a proxy server like turbohide.com. That one is just an example as there's plenty of better ones out there. But it will allow you to:

- Browse websites that your company has blocked
- Leave no trace of the website in your history
- When administrators run reports on the websites you've visited, all they'll see is turbohide.com - not the actual site you visited.

If I saw something like turbohide on my network scans I would be finding my stack if p45's, its against company policy to browse banned sites, the only reason to use those proxy sites is to deceive your employer, therefore gross misconduct.

Of course that was an example. There's plenty of similar sites out there that have innocent names.

Otherwise you could get a bit more technical and do what I do: Set up a HTTP proxy on port 80/8080 on your PC at home. Leave that on all day. Change the settings on Internet Explorer Proxy to point to your home machine.

Then you can browse all day and night without anything but port 80 traffic being registered by you company firewall Smile

Most employers will allow you a little latitude with personal browsing even from company laptops... Just don't go trying to download torrents, pr0n or anything else dodgy like games and stuff and you'll be fine.

Or.... wild idea... buy your own laptop and do what you like on it Smile

You need to be thinking in 'corporate IT' mode. You can lock out the IE proxy settings via group policy.

You can buy a cheapie laptop for less than a hundred quid on ebay... if all it's for is web surfing and online banking it doesn't have to be high spec...

Plus the added bonus of no chance of being sacked for misuse of corporate equipment makes it a winner of an idea in my book... Smile
