I've decided to strip the Mondeo and scrap the rest as I've had enough of it now. Not worth anything selling it complete so that's the best way. I've been a Ford man for over 10 years now and almost certainly want to go Jap this time

Budget I'm not too sure of ATM but I don't want any loans if I can help it so I'm probably looking at a max of £1500 - £2000.

I originally wanted to get a Subaru Legacy GT or GTB but insurance and fuel prices have killed that idea. I may possibly still look at the 2.5L but I've been told the MPG isn't much better than the twin turbos? I would ideally like 35mpg as a minimum.

Other than the Legacy another suggestion has been a Honda Accord diesel, which after a remap will give 185bhp and still 50mpg on a run. For a high mileage one I'm looking at £3000 minimum though.

It also needs to be a hatchback or estate, I can't have a saloon or coupe cos of the dogs using the boot.

So what else could I look at?

I am Jap man myself, but they are not best known for their economical estates. If I had your requirements and budget personally, I would be looking at Audis.

Confusedad: It was a tough call to make, but the Supercharged IS200 is being retired. Confusedad:

Sounds Like you require power as well Essex_ Racer

The 1.4 Civic would be a good car for your budget but the downside is the power.

It doesn't have to be an estate, most of the time it will just be me in the car going to work. But it's handy for the tip runs, when we go away and putting the dogs in. I did think about an Audi but I wanna go Jap this time Wink

After 6 years of driving a 90bhp Mondeo then yes I do need power!! I've been driving an XR3i for the last 5 months and although that only has around 117bphp it's alot lighter and made me realise what I've been missing.

We're picking up a 1.6 auto Civic tomorrow for the missus, but TBH the boot isn't that big. We're going to use it for when we go away but gonna have to use a roof box for the luggage. This is why I've been looking at the Accord as it's bigger.

I don't really need a car that does 50+ mpg as I don't do alot of mileage, work is a 10 mile round trip but I often go down to the parents, which is 120 miles and this is where I would see the benefit.

Thanks but they seem well out of my budget. I'll up it abit if I have to but I can't afford to that much.

your right about the Legacy 2.5L they drink fuel because of the permanent AWD.

Yep if I'm going to get one it may as well be the twin turbo, just a shame they want over a £1k to insure one. I've driven the 2L one before and it was nothing special, didn't feel like it had much power. I also wanted a 4WD/AWD to use over winter to see how much better it is compared to FWD.

What about the Impreza Estate but the non turbo version? Do they drink fuel like the Legacy?

4WD is clearly better then FWD, but with the right tyres on even RWD's are OK in snow.
non-tubby Imprezas are not as bad on fuel, not "fun" drives though.

If you want 4WD, I would again suggest Audi Quattro! lol

I believe the Imprezza to have the same engine/gearbox/4WD system as a Legacy, so I wouldn't expect any better. Possibly higher insurance too.
