Just bought one of my old cars back...
Done the tappets, new rocker gasket. Sprayed the rocker cover too, the amount of crappy old paint that came off into the engine when I took it off meant I had to rub it down and then it looked gash so I got the silver hamerite on the case.
It does definitely need a new sump, but the existing one should hold out until I get the MR2 back on the road. Insert fingers crossed smiley here
The MR2 goes next week, so I will be back to running around in the little Fez again. It needs a bit of attention though! I lent it to a friend who blew the headgasket for me and it's been sat around at the J-Unit since. I'll be sorting this all out over the next few weeks as a demonstration to all of you how cheap motoring really works
Brakes are seized, including handbrake.
Sump is rotten
Water pump is shagged (overtightened belt has knackered the bearing)
Head gasket has gone!
I reckon I can sort all that out for £100. Someone has even given me a brand new radiator for it for free. It'll get the usual oil, oil filter, coolant, thermostat change while I'm in there - the HT leads are fine, will inspect the spark plugs and see what sort of state they're in but they were OK last time I had them out about a year ago. The aux belt will get replaced as it's noisy. It needs yet another new steering knuckle too, the last replacement one I bought off eBay lasted about 100 miles! Then
LS400 electric front seats are going in it
I'm going to knock something together out of all the spare ICE kit I've got lying around
Rear seats will be removed as they are going mouldy, and I'll probably plywood the back end so I can chuck engines, gearboxes, etc in the back without worrying
Stoney amazing!

Yeah, I figured it was no 5 minute task, and that is part of why it is so cool! I have often thought of putting something like that in my living room.
I too still have my first car, a 1.0 106 Mardis Gras! I was going to drive use it as cheap transport, as you have done, but it was just too slow, basic and unreliable! So I got the same car, but with all the options! A 1.6 106 XSI with some mods, and over double the bhp. Now I have my Lex, the misses is driving that, but I still find it useful for when you just need a hatchback! It also means I have a full car of spares for both of my cars! Which is very useful!

It would've been very straight forward if the LS hadn't had position memory. It works by having sensors everywhere throughout the driver's seat to 'record' the position of everything. This is then fed back to the Body MPX ECU. That ECU can then say 'reset the driver seat to x y z' and there's a controller in the base of the seat that does it. It's done by the Body ECU because it also remembers the positions of the steering column and the mirrors.
So I am having to build a mirror of the passenger seat loom, as the passenger seat has all the same motors and switches, but no position memory. Oh yeah I have to de-airbag them too
Reliability is an interesting point, this car has been SUPER reliable up to blowing its head gasket (after what I guess is 5 years of being driven HARD) and at the age of 15. Hopefully it will stay that way after I've mucked about inside the engine but it's unlikely
Now the MR2's gone I've got no car til I fix the fez, so I've just bought all the bits. Complete head gasket set, new head bolts + washers, water pump, sump + gasket, thermostat + gaskets, and a new steering joint. With some other fluids and bits and bobs, a grand total of £129  That wouldn't have even got me the head gasket set for the MR2!
Finally finished off today and fired it up. Started on the button first time, but wouldn't idle and was chucking black smoke out the back. We let it warm up so the 'stat would open to bleed the coolant system but it wasn't playing ball at all. Was a bit worried that I'd killed it!!
Then realised we'd missed 2 vacuum hoses when replumbing the carb, one of which was the MAP sensor - DOH!!! Plumbed it all back in properly and sweet as a nut
It is only a shitty old Fiesta but that's the first time I've properly taken an engine to pieces and put it back together, I was amazed it worked at all!
Pics to follow, and Dan's got a video
