LED = Light Emitting Diode
SMD = Surface Mount Diode
SMD, is basically an LED without any plastic domes on it, which give it a much better light spread and better heat dissipation. But are only good for internal applications because they are not waterproof, and don't have a 'cap' so they need to be under a cover or fascia etc.

IanS200 you're an absolute legend for finding them!
I've got some T5's the same as that already, they are brilliant because they have a nice thick PCB stalk that fits snug into the holder and stops them wiggling lose.
Whereas the cheaper ones with the thin white plastic bases wobble about and over time they just burn out from the bad connection.
These are ****...as they only have very thin wire contacts on one side

And these are brilliant!...because they have sturdy twin contacts on both sides
