Hi guys and gurls, i've heard your all really good with cars which is great, we should get along like a house on fire Wink

i'm after a second opinion with my car, the first opinion is mine lol i'll shut up and get on with it....

the car uses water, not a lot about 2 pints a week i have to keep filling the rad. the engine idles faster than normal around 1000rpm once warm and 1400 when cold. i don't have a thermostat at all but this wouldn't cause a leak/loss of water. the car does not overheat and i have no puddles or coolant on the floor, the radiator was brand new a year ago, i always get a gushing of water inside the car when it's just started up from cold, i've felt around by the heater matrix and everything is dry, i think the head gasket has gone, what do you think?? what can i use to test it? i was thinking about connecting a hose pipe and pressurizing the cooling system with the spark plugs removed the water would enter the bores and i could diagnose which cylinder it was?

You need a thermostat putting in, I am amazed your car even gets to temperature without one. Your fuel bill will be lowered by getting one put in and the car will behave far better when cold.

Your description does point to a head gasket failure? You will be best getting it pressure tested hen you will know for sure.

thanks Phil, in the past i haven't pressure tested anything before removing the head but this time i would like to test it first, i have changed hundreds of head gaskets on all different types of cars, but i don't really want to take this one apart if i don't have to, looks simple enough but i don't really have the time to be without a car at the moment.

Sounds like gasket to me. As phil says needs a leak down or pressure test.

You can get DIY sniffer testers, they are a tube of crystals that you use to check for CO2 in the coolant, they change colour if they detect any.

What Phil said about the thermostat - you can kill your HG by allowing very cold coolant to flow straight onto the very hot joint between the head and the block.

If you're going to change the head gasket yourself let me know. I've sourced full genuine HG sets for members before at trade cost.

thanks stav and toxo, i may of sourced the problem but not 100% sure yet. i connected a garden hose to the pipes from the heater matrix, leaving the heater matrix out of the system as i didn't want to put too much pressure on that, on goes the tap followed by this.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYyVlqLZQ...e=youtu.be
i made it tighter as it was loose by bending the ends for now so it sealed better, once back together i let it run up to temp for ages and it idled fine once the coolant was at 90 degrees~ i bled the system the best i could but once it was cold again i got a gushing of water form the matrix again, i'll give it a few days and see if the water level goes down, i also had the spark plugs out of the holes to see if water came out of the bores with the garden hose attached and nothing, it was dry as a bone inside the bores.

lol, time for a new rad cap then! They do wear out after a while.

Part number is 16401-62100 and they are about £20 I think. I wouldn't use a 2nd hand one.

thanks toxo, i'm hoping it's just the cap that's causing it, i've been really lucky with this car, the timing belt had almost snapped but didn't and now this, i thought i was doomed, but maybe i am :/ don't know yet :/

I've not seen one fail that bad. I suppose worst case it could be the plastic moulding on the radiator that's failed not the cap. When mine failed I just got steam coming out where you're getting water when the engine was hot.

i don't see any steam at all, that was a new radiator a year ago but it didn't come with the cap.
