Careful. A colleague of mine (he is registered on here somewhere) had a 192 which started becoming slow to start. It had a **** battery so that got replaced, and it improved it a bit but it came back. Then it had the starter motor recall done and that improved it a bit, but it came back. Then it wouldn't start when it was hot... This story ends in someone paying him £500 to take it away.
I know that's "just another bad rotary story" but it does happen. I hope it doesn't happen to yours! If it were mine I'd invest in a rotary compression tester and test it every service.
Rotaries do have they're issues but most the time they are due to people not looking after then right. Like when switching off you should hold it at 4000rpm and then switch the ignition off. This helps make sure that all fuel is out of the housing once stopped. Also try and avoid short trips in the vehicle. Should always try and make sure the engine can get to operating temperature by the time you need to switch them off
Does street porting it give a lumpy idle? One of the things I love about a bridgeport rotary is the sound of the lumpy idle... Beautiful.

Love the car, the guy in the unit next to mine at work used to have an RX8 PZ. Sounded so nice, just can't get over how smoothly they rev.
Lumpy V8 sounds like *** on wheels, lumpy rotary sounds broken...
Ross - Have a look at using the 2.3 mazda duratec engine, using the MX5 subframe. The MX5 NC (3rd gen) share A LOT in common with the RX8. Might be cheaper than going SR20 and you can stick with Mazda parts.
