el_bandido Ross - Have a look at using the 2.3 mazda duratec engine, using the MX5 subframe. The MX5 NC (3rd gen) share A LOT in common with the RX8. Might be cheaper than going SR20 and you can stick with Mazda parts.

Ooh good call what about the gearbox?

I'm not 100% certain but I think they both use the J160 (same as the IS200 and S15). It should bolt up.

It's not going to be hassle free, but I think it's probably a fairly "simple" option if you fancy a turbo 2.0 or 2.3 4cylinder.

edit: also, cosworth do bits for that engine too Big Grin

edit 2: You will want the NC 2.0 engine and subframe, not the 1.8 from the earlier model.

Right have spoken to a few companies and im going to pull the engine out myself take it to a specialist and swap it for a fully reconditioned street ported engine to out back in. That along with a new manifold should see 245+ hp and sets it up perfectly for the greddy turbo conversion :-)

That's good news. You didn't give in and buy a Mondeo like my colleague did!

It has taken me a while to get back into a jap car that makesme smile everytime i drive it (even when it went bang) and i love the high revving fun of the rotary so just going to try and improve on it

Did it literally go bang? Or just cut out and never start again? Sad but yay for the new engine

It went bang. Downshifted coming upto a roundabout gave it a little throttle and it made a lovely noise like it was misfiring lovely cloud of blue smoke out the back of it followed but lots of pops and bangs. So straight on the clutch came off the roundabout coasting. Drove a little way on part throttle fine but as soon as you go full throttle and hit 4k revs it again makes the noise and clouds of smoke..... oh well wanted to street port it so a good excuse to do so

Well she is going in tomorrow to be assessed and find the full extent of the damage. I am having a 'Gold rebuild' which consists of strengthened steel tips strengthened springs and better seals etc and also having it street ported and having a new manifold fitted as well. Fingers crossed i havent damaged the rotors or the housings and it wont costs obscene amounts. Should have her back in a couple of weeks and then just need to save for a remap to make the most of the changes
