rod distance calculation would be deck clearance. your right about the compression height being from pin to top of piston, but because low comperession pistons arent flat so the calculation for the comperession height would be the lower flattened part of the bowl of the piston, so ikes ones would have a dish that is 5mm nearer the wrist pin but the top outer edge of the piston remains the same height.

Well not to argue here, but compression height doesn't include the dish or dome of a piston as all. It really is just the distance from top of the piston (meaning the outer most edge, the area that would come almost flush with the deck of the block) to the center of the wrist pin.

Piston to deck height is measured from this same spot on the piston (not from the top of the dome or the dish) to the deck, so the could be zero, positive or even negative meaning the piston sticks out of the block.

For example (Honda example sorry guys, haha) guys use Suzuki Vitara V6 pistons in their D16 motors. They have a -15mm dish (I believe) and some aftermarket sets are heat treated and are great for boost. Problem is the compression height is shorter than a std D16 piston and so the Vitara piston sits down in the block a couple mm's actually. So they're have been some custom rods to fix this and bring the piston up to the correct piston to deck height (nearly zero, Hondas are pretty tight motors).

The reason I'm searching for the 1G-GTe pistons is they have the correct compression height to put Honda B16 rods in my D16 with these GTE pistons and away I go, literally almost zero machine work needed. The B16 rods are very strong and are shorter than the D16 tooth pick sized rods so I even gain a better rod to stroke ratio out of the deal. So stronger rods, forged pistons, and just a little machining and I'm good to go. But sounds like I'll be hunting for a while for these pistons or I'll just have to go the custom route.

Still waiting on the email back from IK, so we'll see. Thanks for the help guys, I'll keep you posted on what I end up doing with the motor.

My current motor has well over 200k miles (stock internally) on it and I've been running 9psi through for over 3 years, driving it daily and racing it A LOT. Smile
Definately time for an upgrade, and then more boost!

Yes sir, kind of cool that the GTE's will basically drop right in, have to machine the wrist pin bore to match the B16 rod, but other than that they're a direct bolt up affair. After talking with IK I may just call a few piston companies like CP, wiseco, etc and get quotes on making a set if the IK's won't work for me.

Just checked my mail and IK Engineering did change the compression height of they're pistons to mate with their longer rods. Dang, think I'm hopped there. I did ask for a few specs to see if maybe they'll work with a different rod setup, hopefully they'll be ok releasing the info I need. We'll see, the search continues!

Anyone come across a set of 1G-GTE's for me yet? Haha, I'll pay a finder's fee to anyone that can track down a set. :-)

Hey man, no worries at all, just good discussion.

I actually did some research last night to make sure I was understanding it too, haha. So always learning something. Thanks for your input as well. I did find a cool diagram of the measurements of a lower rotating assembly, couldn't post it from my phone, so I'll do it on my break from my computer. Kinda cool and informative.
