28-11-2017, 08:15 AM #172cold mate, the cooling system was checked and works on idle, just not when moving the engine is getting "over" cooled somehow.

Not sure how the cooling system works on your engine,but does the rad hose coming from the thermostat housing stay hot when at low temp?

Thats the same as mine does, will warm up when stationary and as soon as you move it starts to go cold? have been told its an air lock on mine and i need to drain the system and refill it slowly with the front end in the air? so that the air releases from the air bleed valve or radiator? But not sure if it will be the same on yours mate?

I don't think it is an air lock, because it was having this issue before xmas, and since then the system has been drained and refilled twice????
Is there anything like a remote thermostat housing, or something like that to stop water going through the rad until it is hot enough???

28-11-2017, 08:28 AM #174The hose coming off the top of the thermostat going to the bottom of the radiator is the one with the temp sensor, so is getting colder when driving.

Wonder if you need a different temp rated thermostat fitted?
I've drained mine 8 times now and still got air in the system, Car runs fine but the engine holds heat and doesn't open the thermostat to feed the system? so thats my next job?
I'll keep looking mate, and if i find anything i'll give you a shout :thumbup1:

Just been having a read about the cooling system and it sounds like a right pain? with the engine fitted in an mr2 turbo there are 4 bleeding points that are used to drain off air? if the coolant hasnt been bled you'll have problems with air in the system, so if the garage that did the refills didn't bleed it right that could be your problem?? But yours being a hybrid build again i'm not sure it will be the same?

Wayne (Supratruck) thinks it could be as simple as the IS200 radiator being to efficient, it is a lot bigger than the MR2 turbo one, made from ally and not copper etc... and the engine is not in a tight engine bay like the MR2 is. He has given me a couple of things to try so. Failing that Toxo will probably have some good ideas, may drive over there on Sunday if he is about?

That's what the normal thermostat housing does lol
Normally in an MR2 the problems you've described are down to an air lock. As Bandit mentioned the cooling system is far too complicated in the '2, as the radiator and heater matrix can't bleed properly back to the radiator cap (bleed points on the matrix and rad are way way lower than the rad cap so gravity comes into play). I wonder if with the changes in mounting angle brought on by mounting inline whether there's a part of the coolant system that now lends itself to airlocks that didn't previously, Like a coolant neck that with the angled mounting in the MR2 points directly vertical, but now the engine is mounted inline (and is on the **** on a different axis) is not pointing in the right direction anymore, or something similar.
Bandit, is that an AW11 coolant diagram? Cause it's certainly not from an MR2 turbo lol
Wayne could well be right about the radiator efficiency, but the MR2 has 10m of extra coolant pipes full of coolant to help chill things so the MR2 wouldn't need a very efficient radiator in the first place. If anything, shortening the coolant system as you have would require a better rad (e.g. the rad in the ST205 is about twice the size of the MR2).
I would run through the last part of the coolant bleeding process to be honest. Is your rad cap still in a vaguelly normal place for the 3S?
Maybe it would be quicker for you to drive over here heh

I have a little time tomorrow before having to go to see Billy Connelly in London:thumbup: what I will do is PM you with mobile number so we can arrange something - weather dependant roads are really bad still.
