Lil update for you... unsurprisingly the fiesta wasn't in quite as good nick as it seemed. The driver's door was randomly deadlocking itself, as a result the central locking wouldn't work (and in fact kept locking the passenger door straight away when you unlocked it), the boot lock is jammed, I put the key straight through one of the rear arches when checking it for rust, the speakers didn't work and the universal joint at the end of the steering column is bust.
The door locking problems were all down to a tiny spring that has disappeared from the driver's lock mechanism. Have bodged that and now that all works fine
The speakers were disconnected from the standard door looms and wired in with proper speaker cable to the boot where there used to be an amp. But now it's back on the original head unit so I have connected both the aftermarket cables and the original door looms to the speakers, working on the basis that nothing will use both at once.
I have removed all the rust from the passenger rear arch (there was a LOT). I am rebuilding the arch using fibreglass as I don't have access to any welding equipment. Done about half a days worth so far after inserting a plastic frame into some strong parts of the arch using self tapping screws. Needs about another days worth of building up layers then it should be pretty sound.
No idea what's wrong with the boot lock.
Steering U-J is a common fault on this mark Fiesta, £15 delivered off eBay so I'll get on that. It makes steering incredibly heavy and then back to normal in about 40 degree increments, if that makes sense?
The steering links always wear out on them, goes very notcy. Its quite a weird feeling when driving them. Nice and easy to change, theres nothing in the way in the bay on those.
A set of locks for those is pennies, i think i picked up a full set for about 40 quid, all brand new with two keys. If your going to be using it for a bit its money well spent
Mmmm filler arches all good fun.
Don't tell him about the locks .. let him climb out the passenger door at the garage.. that's funny sorry toxo
Arch done. It's not pretty but it's solid. I could not be arsed with 2 more evenings of fibreglassing.
Steering UJ done tonight - experience is a wonderful thing. Last time it took me 4 hours, this time it took me 1. I properly packed the centre of it out with thick grease too, so this shouldn't happen again. The first one lasted 11 years, the second one lasted 4...
It may need a new sump though lol... we shall see.
