Hi everyone,

Virgin's so called "super hub" is really frustrating me and with my third one on the way to me in the coming days, I am deciding whether it would be good to invest in my own router and use the "super hub" as a modem.

Currently, I have the following devices connected to the router:

Wireless: PS3, 3DS, 2xmobiles, HP printer
Wired: Smart Tv, PS3, computer, 2nd router (booster),

I'm hoping the new router would mean i can get rid of the booster with better range, the "super hub" is rubbish compared to the old virgin router the D-link, which is good, as i use this as the booster downstairs at the moment.

I stream 720p, 1080p wirelessly to my PS3, few times a week, most of the time it works fine, but other times it crashes the "super hub" also doesnt allow me to browse properly whilst it streaming.

USB is a must now, with wanting to plug in USB storage, and possibly attaching a NAS drive in the near future.

So far I've come up with the Cisco E4200. Rather pricey, but read alot of reviews.

Any other options which keep costs down?

I used a Netgear DGN3500 when I setup the wireless internet/network at work.

Works brilliantly, although that's a modem type router, I'm assuming you need a 'cable' type?

Make sure it has gigabit ethernet, wireless-n and if you want extra range then try to get a 5GHz one.

This one ticks all the boxes...

I can't comment on that particular model, but I can vouch for the quality of ASUS hardware in general. They have a good name for high spec components.

I have come across this:

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DIR-685

must say very impressed with the fact its a built in NAS device, so just slide in a 2.5 sata HD.

Also with plug and play for usb, plug in a usb printer and it becomes available across the network. mind you i got a wireless one anyhow, but can see that being useful?

hmmmm.......

Looks, good but at £130 it's not exactly cost saving. lol

EDIT: 1 thing I just noticed is that it doesn't have 5GHz though, so the range won't be as good as the ASUS. Although built in NAS is nice, however the actual drive itself is the expensive part so it will still cost you another £50+ for the drive.

Printing via USB ports on routers is an absolute ballache, don't bother - keep it wireless!!

I have to admit that the only wireless devices in my house are laptops and phones. Everything else is wired because it's just better. I have admittedly spent about £120 on homeplug/powerline stuff in the last few months but it has a 100% success rate so far! As far as I'm concerned, everything should be wired unless it can't be - wireless should be a fallback rather than a default. And my day job... network engineer
