DDR2 Ram vs DDR3 Ram
DDR2 Ram vs DDR3 Ram
Anyone who has DDR3 ram?
Is it any good, speed wise?
Cant decide between DDR2 1150mhz
or DDR3 1333mhz
price difference DDR2 1150 seems to be more expensive? But finding a motherboard which accepts DDR3 is heavy on the pocket
I think it will make a difference, but to actually get the benefit every link in the chain would need to be optimised as well - like you say you'll need a compliant motherboard and you'd need a powerful processor to be able to use it.
If you're not using it for gaming though I doubt you'd really notice a big difference.

if your running the new i platform then yes, if you are going to be getting ddr3 dual channel then there's no point.
I'm on i7 with 6gb (3x2gb) in tri-channel and it's pretty awesome.

to an extent the ram format isn't os specific, so any os will recognise single channel, dual channel, tri-channel as the architechture is related to the motherboard. Obviously for me running 6gb of ram meant I had to use a 64bit operating system so either Vista or Win7 or xp x64 but wouldn't advise using this. I'm currently using Win7 Ultimate X64 RTM and it's pretty awesome

Purely a hardware thing. Only the new AMD and Core i5/7 stuff can run DDR3. There are some motherboards with DDR2 and DDR3 slots but are uncommon. Was looking at a very swanky Sony laptop with a carbon fibre chassis recently that runs DDR3.
The DDR2 150 stuff will be expensive as it is enthusiast RAM as that spec is not JDEC (memory council people) compliant and is for overclocking. The DDR3 1333 stuff is standard and therefore cheaper.
Let us know what spec your running and can tell you what you should get rather than going for really expensive fast stuff that may be overkill.............bear in mind that for example DDR2 1066 will be quicker than DDR3 1066 due to latency.
thanks for the info guys !
im looking at building a top spec gaming system, this is the sort of spec im looking at
Motherboard: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158557
HD: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150256
Memory: ethier this:http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166995
or this: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164792
Graphics: im trying to get my hands on a GTX280 from pakistan where my dad has gone, as it would be pretty cheap there, but if that desnt happen then it would be this i would get :http://www.ebuyer.com/product/160748
CPU : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167113
what you guys think? it will cost me about 500 to build it complete with parts, what changes would you made, whilst keeping costs low? or have i selected some overboard stuff which i dont need? the motherboard has to be SLI so i can dual it up in the future

decent spec saraj, however imo I would change the motherboard to a Gigabyte as the bios is a lot stronger and the boards are a lot better quality, also I would go with a seagate hard drive over the Deskstars and unless you are planning on overclocking I would drop the ram to PC6400.
DDR3 is available on LGA 775 platform but you aren't going to notice any performance gain over DDR2

If buying new you should get a quad core processor - which i would recommend a new Core I5 for the price. You can then get a dual channel DDR3-1333 package and a P55 chipset based motherboard. For around the same cost.
Looking at around £300 from Overclockers.co.uk (I find Ebuyer can confuse as they sell some very old stuff)
Also that graphics card you are looking at is a 192 core based 260 when you can buy the newer 216 core 260 for very little more.

agreed with eDeath here, personally I only use Overclockers or Microdirect as their stuff is always top rate.
Personally I don't see the point in going i5 as the motherboards are near enough the same price as i7 boards and the cpu's are little more but you are getting a lot more options mainly tri-chan ram.
If you are staying dual chan ram imo stay with LGA775 and get a quad core cpu
