Computer monitor / TV
Computer monitor / TV
Looking to replace my 19" monitor with a larger screen, planning to wall mount it behind my desk so it can also double as a TV in the bedroom. What size is the best to go for? Is it best to go for a 24-27" sort of size? As a TV something like 40" would be spot on, but I'm thinking that wouldn't be very nice or easy to work on or sit in front of to use as a monitor?
Has anyone done anything similar and have any recommendations as to the best way to go?
Trouble is, where you mount it for use as a monitor might be different from where you want it as a TV ? As you say, you probably don't want to go too big or it will be horrible to use. Drive it from the PC at its native resolution (check what that is in advance to make sure it's big enough compared to what you are used to, and how you want to use it) and it should look fine.
Location is actually not too much of a problem, the screen will be positioned first and foremost to be comfortable when sitting and working at the desk, but this will also be fine from the bed for example.
The distance to the bed will be about 6-8ft I think so screen doesn't need to be too big, but with TVs they can never really be too big! Just want to make sure that the screen should still be comfortable to work on when sitting at the desk right in front of it so for that purpose a massive screen wouldn't work.
The other option is to keep my existing 19" monitor and get a separate TV and run dual displays but I don't want to clutter the room with screens......resolution wise I think any screen I buy will be 1920x1080 - at the mo I'm running 1280x1024 so you're probably right that I shouldn't go massively bigger as it won't look that good close up at this resolution.
Cheers, yep when sitting at the desk I'll be right in front of it, 2-3ft max so think I should go for the smaller screen then. How big are the screens on the big imacs? Are they 27"? Was playing with one of those in PC world and that seemed like a decent size to work on, so maybe I'll go for something like that.
Next question is is it better to go for a monitor or a TV bearing in mind that it will be used much more as a monitor and less as a TV? Or are they generally the same quality/screen wise and it's just the fact TVs have tuners in them? Only reason I ask is that monitors seem to have much quicker response times compared to TVs.........
Been looking into this a bit recently and not sure what to do. I currently have a 19" 4:3 ratio (as in normal shape) monitor, if I get a 24" widescreen will that not feel like it's much bigger than what I have?
There's a Benq 24" LED backlit screen for £140 which is an absolute bargain and reviews are good too so sounds perfect, but not sure if I'll be disappointed with the size.
Going upwards, the only 27" monitor I can find is made by Iiyama, no reviews but their stuff is usually pretty good I think. Alternatively there are 27" TVs around - at this size they're both about the same price (£300ish). If going for this size, is it better to go for the proper monitor or the TV? On paper the TV sounds better as it has a tuner so can be used as a TV without the PC on, but will it be worse at being a monitor?
You're right to be cautious about the size versus aspect ratio thing. Lexusboy's suggestion of a bit of cardboard sounds good to me. At a guess, I would imagine a 24" screen that is 16:9 will "only" be a similar height to your 4:3 19" screen, so you might well be disappointed if you think it's a lot bigger.
Alternatively, try going into a shop and measuring the height of a 24" (diagonal) screen, to compare with your 19" one.
I think all these 16:9 computer monitors are stupid. I don't want to watch films on my computer, I want to use it for computing ! I've got a TV for films etc. So I want a 4:3 computer monitor.
