Good with electrics?
Hello! ,
I have a headset sitting here. Its a stero headset with a microphone attatched. It has the option of 2 speakers or 7.1 Virtual surround sound. From the headset comes 1 wire, which splits into 2 jacks (For microphone, and Speakers). These 2 jacks plug into a USB sound card, then go into the pc via USB.
I have tired getting it replaced under warranty but since its nearly 3 years old that kinda failed. I know where the fault is, and its right near the rubber jack.
The wire is coated in a fabricy kinda of protective layer (like a shoe lace), and i can see it 1/2 into the jack. Im just wondering, is there a single wire within it, even though its 7.1 virtual (Its still a stero headset). No sound at all comes out, and with no possibility of a replacement, im wondering if its possible to cut around the wire, and join it up inside, and tape it up?
Here is the wire. The first circle is the problem part, 2nd circle is the wire inside the jack.
thanks
Jambo
Which is it for headphone or microphones?
depends how many sections on the jack plug mate,
but i reckon there will be at least three wires inside (one for the left, one for the right, and one earth.screen). you can buy a replacement plug, cut the borken one off and solder the new one on.
Its for the speakers. So the 3 wires (if there is 3), just solder onto the end of the jack?
Also, do the wires have to be touching end to end or can they be overlapped and taped
Ok, update.
Cut the wire and shaved plastic coating off. On the headset there is a bare copper wire and a red and blue wire (with white fuur coming out of them? Im guessing the copper in these are very very thin?) I cut a jack off something else, and there is a copper and a yellow wire in. Im guessing because the headset it was cut off only had 1 ear :|. So i need to find something with 2 speakers to cut? (A jack to jack lead or not?)
Dont think so. But it came with an extension lead. So i could cut the jack off that part which is slightly longer. Shall bring it down to you after tea
you need to cut if off something where the jack plug has 3 segments
Ive cut the plastic off around the jack stav and its all inside. There is no way of getting into the jack without damaging it. The alternative would be to buy a new clean jack? But i dont have any equipment.
I have got a new jack off the extension and cut the wires down. I now have RED GOLD BLUE on each end. But these wires look like theyre covers, but inside is just white fluffy material, me or dean can find any copper within them???
Inside each one is just white fluff. You go to separate them and end up with nothing :S
The white fluff is only packing material!! There must be copper in the wires, I assume you have stripped the internal wires back.
I managed to "untwist" the blue bit, and still no copper there, so i cant be cutting it off anywhere. Maybe the blue is coloured copper or something, as it untwisted leaving white stuff in the middle?
