Number plates on photos
Number plates on photos
Yesterday at JapFest, we were asked to remove/obscure number plate details, when posting up pics on the forum. Faced with the amount of pics I need to edit, I could cry.
However, can I ask what's the point of this ? Is this just for our own members' cars, or for all cars full-stop ?
If we do hide all number plate details, or even just our own, what's to stop other clubs from posting up pics of our number plates ? I'd like to think that some other people will have been popping by our stand and taking pics of our cars.
I had show plates on my car yesterday, but this has nothing to do with that. Even if I didn't have show plates on, I'd be happy for my number plate to be posted up, given that I have no control over this sort of thing in the world of Internet, and I was at a public event. I don't drive around the public roads with my number plate hidden, it's on view there all the time, and it's on view parked in my road.
I'm sure there are enough pics on the Internet anyway if criminals really wanted to trawl for them. Aren't we shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted ?
A lot of it originally was because a lot of modded cars were being stolen, (few years ago) people were going through car clubs finding cars with serious mods or rare parts, stealing the car and selling or using the bits? a lot of people show where they live in there profile so people know where to look for the cars?
I do remove the plates sometimes, but with the amount of pic's posted on forums, its not worth doing any more, If members want me to remove there plate from a pic they can ask me to do it, and i'll usually do asap for them
more and more car owners from shows are being targeted by organised gangs for number plates. so when a vehicle is stolen a false plate will go on they can drive it round sell it and no one would be any wiser or exported etc..
fuel station drive off's are on the increase, red light jumpers, and all manners of car related crimes its down to us as a community to try and stop things like this happening.
whilst you are right we have our plates on show driving around the uk etc every day. what better place to go find someone's plate for a car that may get stolen that a performance car show we are easy pickings.
show plates are a good idea to minimize the chance of your car being cloned whilst at a meet or in the pictures that follow.
we are not dictating you must edit the number plates out its a recommendation none off us want to see any of the fellow members getting grief due to there car being cloned
I can imagine it being a worry if, say, you had a new R35 GT-R or something that is likely to be targetted. Not so much an issue for 10-year-old cars, surely ? ok, sure Tango's IS-F you could argue could be a target for such a thing.
As for forecourt drive-offs, you can use any old plate for that surely, you don't need to pick a car of the same make/colour ? So I don't think this is relevant to that.
Are we being asked to obscure the plates for cars from other clubs, or just our own ?
Like I said, I don't really get this, given how our cars plates will be all over the pages of other sites anyway.
This info i received from HPI when i recently contacted them about being a trader on our site.
One thing you may want to consider (having browsed your website) – for the member car features, I would encourage your members to be coy about displaying their registration plates. We work with other classifieds and enthusiasts websites, and it isn’t unknown for criminal elements to pinch registration numbers for cloning purposes. The more information available easily, the greater the opportunity for someone to misuse the data.
Outlaw members will soon be able to take advantage of there services at a reduced cost in the next couple of days, See HPI on OUTLAW Traders in the next few days.
ok, here's my suggestion.
Why don't we suggest to all club members that they use show plates at car shows, for their own protection. And if they post up photos of their own car then they *might* want to consider obscuring their number plate etc.
I just think it's a bit OTT to ask people to remove plate details on photos of other cars (which were publicly on show to thousands of people).
So putting the emphasis on the car owner, not on the photographer ?

whilst I can see the whole idea of having your car numberplate hidden at shows to prevent fraudulent use of your details, I can't help but feel that if gangs wanted to scam a car they would go to car parks, keep eyes peeled for cars to scam or just walk down the road lol?
