The rebuild begins....
So, my Procharger has been making a few strange noises recently. Today it got quite a bit worse to the point where the engine seem to be having trouble idling due to the supercharger putting up some resistance and I even got a flashing CEL which went out before I could get a chance to read it!
So (sorry Oli) this afternoon I started taking the unit off. Much to my surprise, the bolts holding the charger in place were only slightly tighter than finger tight! I think because I had the mounting bracket tightened, the powdercoat has since compressed and the bolts loosened.
I was tempted to put it straight back on, but I noticed a small amount of shaft play which is a good indication that the bearings needed replacing anyway. Also when I emptied the unit of oil, it came out as black sludge!
This thread will be my rebuild progress. So far I've only got the main bolts out and split the head unit apart. Unfortunately before I can go any further I need to get the pulley off which is going to need a belt wrench, some heat and a puller.

OK, so back on topic, I had a go at removing the bolt from the pulley over the weekend. Unfortunately no matter what I used to try and hold the pulley in position, it would just end up turning when I tried to undo the bolt with my 3ft long breaker bar.
So I took it down to a local garage on Monday and with the help of 3 of their mechanics, a massive set of mole grips and an impact wrench they finally managed to get the bolt off.
Unfortunately though they didn't have a gear puller suitable for pulling the pulley off the shaft. So I had to invest in this:
It took the best part of 3 hours to set it up in a way that didn't keep slipping around. But finally....
This allowed me to get the front of the charger off so I could get to the bearings:
My intention was to note down all the serial #'s of the bearings and then try and find a place in the UK that could order them in for me. HOWEVER, Procharger the barstewards have ground off all the identification marks making it almost impossible to rebuild the unit without sending it back to them.
Luckily though, there is one site on the net that have reverse engineered the bearings and sell a kit with all the seals and bearings in for my charger. I opted for their Ceramic bearing kit which is an improvement over the OEM bearings and allows the charger to be spun at higher RPM's. The whole kit was $500 shipped to the UK, so let's hope I don't bust any of the bearings when they arrive!!!
