Even I was a bit surprised at how much tracking there is, and I knew this kind of thing happens...
im not sure i understand it,
Essentially, you visit the sites it shows in grey, but in doing so you gather the cookies from the various red sites it shows you. Those red sites effectively build a profile of you from the sites you visit via the cookies on your machine...
In the end the profile built is used for targeted adverts and marketing by these red sites. As per the demo, you visit only a few sites but end up supplying some information to many you didn't even know about...
The general message is...pretty much every site you visit stores tracking cookies on your computer that follow what you do and can link them selves with the same cookes on other sites to see if you visit a particular group of website frequently e.g. if you visit autotrader, then pistonheads, then ebay motors. It knows your a car person, and advertisments will pop up to advertise...you guessed it, cars!
So clear out your cookies regularly is the moral of the story

My browser is set to delete cookies every time I close it...
My internet security program does 'idle time scans' for things like tracking cookies, so probably does it at least once everytime I use my laptop.
I also use a fantastic bit of software called Advance Sytem Care which does a 'computer health check', gets rid of old registry files etc. and just generally speeds things up
