Gord Now your about to start somethingiscoStu:
Well i have had what i call normal pc's in the past, compac, acer, HP, and some home made one's, after short time all developed their own problemsad: crashing, running slow, freezzz up etc etc. windows problems ? machine problems ? i don't know, but they are now in the loft collecting dust.
So got myself IMac and to be honest, i have never looked back, it runs today as it did the day it was opened, never had a problem with it at all (touch wood).
Worth the extra i paid over another pc ............... yes, but this is only my view i'm sure others will be different :thumbup1:

Don't know if this is a really stupid question, but if you run windows on a Mac, is it exactly the same as running windows on a PC?

DaveEdin Pretty much... Then you're just running Windows on the apple hardware, and the experience (I've not tried it myself) SHOULD be exactly the same as running on a PC of equivalent spec.
And the starter edition of Win7 doesn't come with stuff like the aero pack etc which is the bits that let you choose the cooler wallpapers and stuff...
Once again - Linux. All of the above and more, with much better security...

Nah mate. Download a LiveDisc for Ubuntu and boot your PC from it. It won't overwrite your hard disk or anything and you can try it out without any impact to your data.
Try a google for Ubuntu help - you'll see just how much help there is for this distribution, on the forums and such.
Worth noting that almost all the spyware/malware/trojans/viruses and so on that plague Windows can't affect Linux... I have a virus checker on my machine, but I only use it for files I've received from Windows using friends, and then it's because I might pass them onto someone else who uses Windows - not because of any risk to myself...
My mum and dad use Linux, as do my 11, 8 and 7 year old kids - all been using it for a couple of years at least now, and if none of them has any issue with it, no reason you should either! It's not command driven any more (unless you want it to be, anyway), hasn't been sine the early 90s. Funnily enough a bunch of the new stuff in Win 7 (like previews of windows on the taskbar) is stuff I've had in Linux for years...
My 1st choice for a new laptop would be lenovo my current one is 3 years old and apart from an update to win 7, 4 new screens it is perfect. The screens are because I drip things like this a lot. Apple only make hardware and software for their machines that are built with known components, therefore ensuring 100% comparability. Whereas pc's are built from an almost unlimited array of components do It Is far harder to write software that will be 100% compatable so I think Microsoft dies a good job and makes excellent products.
Sorry about the spelling using the phone to post.
