Back on task again after a few days away. Managed to FINALLY separate the volute housing from the impeller. Had to go in the oven for 30 minutes and was sprayed with plots of plusgas.
Now need to get the impeller off so I can pull the bearings. Then its just a matter of ordering some new seals, a few bearings and putting it all back together again.
So my replacement bearings turned up today. I thought I would need a press to get them back on, but as it turns out I managed to use the gear puller (in reverse) with a bit of improvisation to push the bearings back on again
Oil slinger with its new bearings..
Input shaft with its new bearings on...
Impeller shaft with its new high speed bearings on. I still need to sort part of this out though as one of the housings from the old bearings is stuck and I cant find any easy way to remove it.
Comparing the old bearings to the new ones is night and day. The old ones feel gritty and have sideways play/ The new ones are rock solid and rotate as smooth as silk
jimxms OK, so back on topic, I had a go at removing the bolt from the pulley over the weekend. Unfortunately no matter what I used to try and hold the pulley in position, it would just end up turning when I tried to undo the bolt with my 3ft long breaker bar.
So I took it down to a local garage on Monday and with the help of 3 of their mechanics, a massive set of mole grips and an impact wrench they finally managed to get the bolt off.
Unfortunately though they didn't have a gear puller suitable for pulling the pulley off the shaft. So I had to invest in this:
It took the best part of 3 hours to set it up in a way that didn't keep slipping around. But finally....
This allowed me to get the front of the charger off so I could get to the bearings:
My intention was to note down all the serial #'s of the bearings and then try and find a place in the UK that could order them in for me. HOWEVER, Procharger the barstewards have ground off all the identification marks making it almost impossible to rebuild the unit without sending it back to them.
Luckily though, there is one site on the net that have reverse engineered the bearings and sell a kit with all the seals and bearings in for my charger. I opted for their Ceramic bearing kit which is an improvement over the OEM bearings and allows the charger to be spun at higher RPM's. The whole kit was $500 shipped to the UK, so let's hope I don't bust any of the bearings when they arrive!!!
