IS200 engine swap questions
IS200 engine swap questions
Hi guys, just looking to get some basic answers on fitting an Ls400 motor into my is200. Not going to tune it but im a big lover of V8's (im a drag racer, what u expect lol) and looking to get just a little more shove. I am planning on buying a complete car to do the conversion with.
What is involved in the conversion, i understand the engine mounts are the same but need a 10mm spacer? what about the gearbox mount? Whats the deal with the wiring and ECU? wiring isnt a problem for me its just knowing what is needed to make all things work. Can i use the LS400 ECU instead?
now the big one, id like to stay on a manual gearbox. Is this possible by using the IS200 gearbox? the reason i ask is i dont want to spend alot of money hunting down supra gearbox's etc. If i cant use the IS200 or even possibly the LS400 auto gearbox, then im not going to bother doing it as its just not worth my time as im planning on the the conversion taking a week or 2 (yes i know, i like to work fast) and on a minimal budget as possible (all my money ends up going on bike racing lol)
are there any other problems im likely to encounter?
cheers
john
Wiring, is a nightmare, you'll need part is200 ecu wiring, part v8 ecu wiring.
Thought the mounts were more different than a spacer?
Is200 is a no I'm afraid. You've just missed a r154 for sale I think.

Wrong fitment, unless you make a custom bell housing adapter. Power wise both me and dave are still running a standard box so no issue with power.
As for the wiring. The fuel gauge works by counting how many times the injector fires so the 8 cylinder will make it go down too quick.
The aircon, body ecu, speedo, and ecu all talk to each other so that needs considering.
It's basically a nightmare, I solved it by using a standalone ecu and a new dash.
Ok so gearbox could possible be used then.
I suppose i would need to see if the LS400 ECU is a multiplex type ecu like the Is and possibly interlink it into the system so it replaces the Is ecu but talk to all the other ecu's?
I don't know if the multiplex will work the same?
As for the fuel gauge, every time the igniters fire they have a fourth wire labelled igf, this goes from 5v to ground every fire. The ecu feeds this back to the dash that then drops. Every quarter of a tank the dash checks the tank sensors and corrects itself if needed. That's why older cars modified by tdi found issues because they cut the igf cable completely, whereas on my original install before I went standalone we left it connected (although the link fired the igniters) and it worked perfectly.
The aircon also needs an engine speed signal to work but the crank position sensor throws a wobble when it has 2 signals taken off it (in my case 1gfe ecu and link, in yours 1gfe and v8 ecus). So we had to wire a switched signal to the led on the aircon panel and use the link to control it
It was slightly easier with the rest of mine as the link did a lot of the work
I see, so a standalone would make things slightly easier then?
how much is the Link? ive dealt with DTA before, would this be a good option also?
If you are prepared to have the car as an auto the job can be less hassle. Thor Motorsport already make a set of engine and gear box mounts to fit the LS400 engine and box into the IS200. As for the ECU, Stav has it right with the stand alone. Every major conversion on an IS200 to the v8 I have seen always use the Link G4 or a stand alone system. V8 Manual conversion is expensive as Thor is the only UK based compant that makes the bell housing flywheel etc to convert to manual. Ther are some companies in australia which are a lot cheap but once you factor shipping into the equation these no difference in the price.
