Hi all.
Just joined, was a member in another forum and found that alot of the big boyz in that forum came here so i thought i would jump over aswell lol.
Anyway i need some advise about the drive on my mid year 2001 is200 sport.

It's all COMPLETELY standard. Had it 4 years and for the last year the drive on it has deteriated. Driving in a straight line on a flat road is still perfect, no problems. But as soon as u hot a bump or a pothole, vibrations go through the whole car like you've just been hit with something lol. It becomes really unstable, it feels like it's just not taking the bumps/potholes well i.e. it feels ike the shocks are not doing what their supposed to.

This is what ive done cince it started developing the this issue (bearng in mind that i'm not mechanic and i dont want to loose the OEM spec), front discs have been changed for new mintex ones, the front and back pads have been replaced for new mintex ones. New standard 215/45/17 tyres front and back at 32 air pressure. and its not really made a difference.

I measured the distance from the top of the front tyres to the wheel arch and the distance differs when you compare the front nearside to the front offside. Just so you get an idea, on the front nearside i can just about squeeze three fingers in the gap from top of tyre and the wheel arch whereas on the front offside i can quite easly put 4 fingers.
And the same is the at the rear but it the oppsoite i.e 3 fingers in offside and 4 fingers in nearside.

Another thing that i've noticed is when you break hard and turn at the same, left or right, you get a a some loud CRACKING/CLUNKING noises coming from the front of the car, (dont know if that related.).

IN terms of the geomtery since i bought the car, the front tyres needed replacing as their were worn on the inside so the local tyre gargage did tracking on it and replaced the tyres, but that was before i starting reading in the other forum, i wont mention which one, about having it WIM'd. They just hung a couple of laser things on the back tyres and then adjusted something from under the front of the car either side.

I realy miss that feeling i used to get from the car in the first couple of year when i used to get a lot of satisfaction from driving it, it's just not the same anymore.

Can anyone give me some advise about what i should start checking or doing to try to get the is back to what it was.

If you'r reading this then you've not fallen asleep and hopefully you can give me some advise lol. Confusedleep:

thanks for the help in advance.

M4ddy some of the other is200 sport owners will know these cars better than I.

Most users are running with 36 -38 pressure in the tyres.
Outside edge is normally due to low tyrer pressure

I trust that your break pads where change by a qualified mechanic.

Tony at WIM would be worth while visit to put your mind at rest.

Who's he calling BIG - I ain't that big:Bazza:

Only joking with you.

If the car has OEM spec Geo then that is a probable cause of premature tyre wear, the IS200's OEM Geo settings are wrong from the factory so setting up the geo to OEM spec won't help things at all. Tony from Wheels In Motion will be able to advise you 100% what to do .

I understand about the geometry lads but would that have a deteriorating effect on the car not taking potholes and bumps well and the difference in the distance from the top of the tyre to the wheel arch?....ive tried to drive with the air pressure on 36 but it was slipping and slidding all over the place, so i put it back down to 32 and it seems to drive beter now,
would having the geometry done sort the problem with the car not taking the potholes/bumps well?

the brakes were done by a local garage and i was with him the time he was doing it, so i was standng over him and making sure he does it properly, he put the clips back on again and also put the copper anti squeele grease on again so i think it was done properly.

Hi m4ddy,

The pot holes problem could well be to do with a worn damper. Though this should be easy enough to spot as it will be leaking. I had one go completely empty on me! (X reg - 75k miles.) I have replaced all 4 dampers since buying it 3 yrs ago. The fact that the car is listing to one side also points to this. Dampers are about £100 a pair and standard fit are KYB Excel-Gs.

I would say that the clunking sound is missing clips on the brake pads (the ones either end on the front sets) but you said you stood over the guy.

I would recommend 35psi (36-38psi is for 18" IIRC Lexusboy) pressure in all your tyres. What brand are you running?

thats what i though about the listing to one side, must be the shocks.
when u say they are easy to spot, as they would be leaking, how do u check if they are leaking?...would i be looking for it dropping oil somewhere?....yeah i kinda was looking around on net for shock absorbers and saw them around for £100 for the pair.

About the missing clips, would it look like a small metal rod bent in half to work as a retaining spring?

the tyres are budget ones, back two are autoguard and the front are admiral, as far as i know they are brand new, they had the stickers still on them when i bought them and the red/white line running all the way around the tyre on the thread. since buying the car i've had on the bridgestone potenza's, then dunlop and now the auotguard/admiral.

as far as i know the shocks fit across the range.the coil springs are different on the sport model.kyb are oem replacements.if you cant see oil leaks from the shock absorber doesnt mean the are ok.they coul have an internal failiure.
