Lost a few captive nuts
by toxo, 10-03-2019, 08:59 AM
There's a front suspension arm on my car that bolts to the chassis rail with 4 chunky M8 bolts with big spreader washers. There are 4 corresponding captive nuts inside the chassis rail. On my car 2 of these captive nuts are missing. The missing nuts are both on the same side of the rail, allowing the plate that bolts to it to flex down the middle.

I'm looking at ways of fixing this. So far the suggestions I've got are:

Cut a small access section out of the chassis rail, weld some new nuts inside, weld the chassis rail up with some reinforcement. I DON'T LIKE THIS OPTION!!

Insert rivet nuts into the chassis rail where the captive nuts used to be. I like this option, but are rivet nuts strong enough? Obviously I'd go for steel ones not aluminium ones.

Weld a stud inplace of the missing nut, and use a nut instead of a bolt to bolt the suspension up. Not so keen on that as I see it as being a difficult place to weld to.

Weld a plate onto the chassis rail with 2 holes through to the existing nuts, and 2 new nuts in place of the missing ones. I think this alters the suspension geometry too much (basically the arm will sit lower by the thickness of the plate).

Could those of you with engineering experience suggest how to move forward?

Thinking of selling the Supra
by mplavery, 09-03-2019, 06:44 PM
hey people

Since my girlfriend bought her 350z i have had the urge for a few months now to sell the Supra and get something different.

I was hoping to get a mag feature of some kind before i sell it as that was one of the things i wanted to achieve but i have not had any luck with that at the mo.

As well as me having the urge i have also had a few Pm's asking if i would be interested in selling too but im in two minds at the mo. I dont know if its due to my girlfriend getting a new car that has caused this or me just owning the car for over 5 years now and want a change. Or it might be that i have not really driven her this year and when i do all this urge of me selling will dissappear.

Im going to go to a few shows first and see how i feel about this but What i have in mind is a R34 or a 370Z

Price is a tricky one, I do have a price in mind which is £13k which i wont go below, i dont care if people think i would get that or not for it, IMO the car is in showroom condition, i would rather keep it then it go for less IMO Its only done 50k so its going to last me a long time thats for sure lol

Does anyone else have this urge ?

Is200 Engine Bay Bolts
by Rabster, 09-03-2019, 04:31 PM
OK so does any one have a detailed list of the bolts in the is200/300/altezza engine bay.

there is a company that offers them for the Is300 in the states but by all accounts not for the is200....

for example

The main engine cover is held on by M6x25 (one is M6x35)

The VVTi cover is held on by M6x25

And the fuse box covers are M6x20

thanks to sprinter2012 for the above

Help Find me a new car
by Rabster, 09-03-2019, 03:45 PM
OK well my estate is starting to bore me now, most of you will have seen it at the JAE show towing a trailer its still a good run around and not to bad on fuel around 420 the mpg gauge reckons around 29mpg

so what Japanese vehicles would you all recommend here are the vital points

Needs to be long enough to get 2.5m straight lengths inside (3m if forced into foot wells etc)

able to tow without a problem

not to juicy as it will be my daily driver

looks fairly decent

a decent insurance bracket im paying no more than £650 per year at the mo

possibly 4wd

up to a 5k budget

Should I vote, YES to AV or NO to AV ?
by Saraj, 08-03-2019, 06:28 PM
Many reports it doesnt benefit extreme groups such as BNP, but some does.

Anybody decided yet?

Any coolant in upper radiator hose on IS300?
by jimxms, 08-03-2019, 09:03 AM
I've just taken delivery of a new radiator hose set for the IS, and was planning on installing the upper hose tonight. Is there much coolant in there, or can I pretty much pull it off without worrying about putting buckets underneath to catch it all?

I had a quick look through the rad cap last night, and there was possibly some coolant pooled in there, but couldn't really see for sure.
