Lexus IS-F cruched for street racing!!
Jim the US test was 20 multi guess questions - I got 100% without reading the book as did Heather, the driving part was 5 left turns and 1 right, on a quiet back street with no traffic not more then 5 mins. The "examiner" didn't know how to drive a manual car, she marked H down for not putting the 'box into "park" - the car didn't have a "park" option because manuals just don't.
So the UK test is advanced compared to the US one - a country where everyone has a car, and most cars are V6 or V8, town roads are 3 lanes deep and speeds of 45 in built up areas, 75 on freeways - so all higher then UK, clearly I can only comment for Arizona - California was similar as was Texas, Wyoming? or some place like that you pay for your licence and don't do a test. Accidents are just as common as the UK, but certainly not more common showing that it is probably not the test that is at fault its the human behind the wheel.
The case above is pure shock tactics, the lesson is loud and clear - so loud we are discussing the crushing of a car here in the UK 12000 miles from where it happened. I think the lesson is very clear and everyone who sees this video will know the consequences of road racing.
They can't sell off parts as they have strict rules and regulations about 2nd hand part sales. They could sell the car, but what message will that broadcast, what strength would that message be?
If you really want to shock them, then go and make them visit the scene of a high speed crash and SHOW THEM exactly and directly what they could have been responsible for.
Taking away the car and crushing it isn't really 'shocking' and the only reason we're discussing it here is because it's a high-end jap car.
I'm guessing that the guy involved in the street race already knew the consequences of his actions before he engaged in the racing (unless this is a new law?), so clearly he was to some degree prepared for what would happen if he was caught.
Maybe (trying not to think too much about F&F) he was racing for money, so the cost of an IS-F is nothing to him? Therefore no lesson learnt, other than he now probably has an even lower view of the law than before.
That's a fair point, needed to remind myself this isn't just for speeding, it's for street racing for the sorts that think this is a good idea the car being crushed is probably the only message that will get through.
Also suppose given the way legal systems work, this provides no way of getting the car back.
Bit like the way the Evo was shot up on Top Gear, that was going to the crusher anyway.
People will only learn if they want to. You force someone into improving their driving it will never happen. This is why I am no longer involved in speed awareness courses. These are the people who need to learn and improve their understanding of driving but not a single person on the course, in my opinion anyway, improved. They were there to get a day off work and no point on their licence.
So, how do we teach the unteachable? Simple. Shock them or fine them.
In terms of the UK driving test, it is one of the most difficult tests to pass in the world. In order to do it, you have to be fairly good at what our doing, if not very lucky in some circumstances. If you were finding it a bit too easy then your instructor should have picked up on this and made things more challengng for you.
No one wants to know my qualifications that I have in terms of bing a driving instructor. It is all to do wih price. I have been doing this now for nearly ten years and all they are concerned with is price.
So be that as it may you make people learn is by damaging the material things they hold so dear or by hitting them in the pocket. No one is going to be able to change driver attitude apprt from the driver.
Find myself nodding to Jim's comments above...
The driving instructor one (realised that "Jim" could mean either of you  )
Problem with auctioning the car is that he could get somebody to buy it back for him?
Although selling, auctioning it would be good, even letting the dealer buy it back and put the money back into something better, rather than just crushing it...
How about:
Give it the mechanical once over and if it's sound enough, chuck some police livery on it and use it against the lawbreakers?
Just a thought...
or just give it to me
